The document discusses the Internet of Things (IoT) and was submitted by a student at Vellore Institute of Technology. It provides an introduction to IoT, defining it as smart machines interacting and communicating to generate useful data and actions. It then discusses latest trends in IoT, including embedded processing becoming ubiquitous in appliances, vehicles, and other systems. Key trends that will impact IoT in the coming years are outlined as cloud computing, semantic technologies, and increasing autonomy of IoT systems. The student's areas of interest in working with IoT are then listed, such as security applications using sensors, smart home appliances controlled remotely, and automated troubleshooting of computers.

2. INTRODUCTION
We’re entering a new era of computing technology that many are calling the Internet of
Things (IoT). Machine to machine, machine to infrastructure, machine to environment,
the Internet of Everything, the Internet of Intelligent Things, intelligent systems—call it
what you want, but it’s happening, and its potential is huge.
So, basically from a technology perspective, the IoT can be defined as smart machines
interacting and communicating with other machines, objects, environments and
infrastructures, resulting in volumes of data generated and processing of that data into
useful actions that can “command and control” things and make life much easier for
human beings.

4. LATEST TRENDS
The pervasiveness of embedded processing is already happening everywhere around us. At
home, appliances as mundane as our basic toaster now come with an embedded MCU that
not only sets the darkness of the piece of toast to our preference, but also adds functional
safety to the device. The electrification of vehicles has already started happening, and in just
a few years from now, each car will contain >50 percent more electronics than it did just five
years ago. The cars of the future will indeed be able to drive themselves. Similar changes are
also happening in other aspects of our lives … in factories, transportation, school systems,
stadiums and other public venues. Embedded processing is everywhere.
The pieces of the technology puzzle are coming together to accommodate the Internet of
Things sooner than most people expect. Just as the Internet phenomenon happened not so
long ago and caught like a wildfire, the Internet of Things will touch every aspect of our lives
in less than a decade.
5. Trends that we can expect to make big impact in the next few years:
1. CLOUD COMPUTING: Cloud computing has been established as one of the major building blocks of
the Future Internet. New technology enablers have progressively fostered virtualisation at different
levels and have allowed the various paradigms known as “Applications as a Service”, “Platforms as a
Service” and “Infrastructure and Networks as a Service”. With the virtualisation of objects being the
next natural step in this trend, the convergence of cloud computing and Internet of Things will enable
unprecedented opportunities in the IoT services arena.
2. IoT and Semantic Technologies: Semantic technologies will also have a key role in enabling
sharing and re-use of virtual objects as a service through the cloud. The semantic enrichment of virtual
object descriptions will realise for IoT what semantic annotation of web pages has enabled in the
SemanticWeb.
3. Autonomy: The Internet of Things will exponentially increase the scale and the complexity of existing
computing and communication systems. Autonomy is thus an imperative property for IoT systems to
have.
6. INTEREST AREAS
• My area of interest is Internet of Things using Cloud Computing and Sensors.
I would intend to work on:
• Applications in Security Systems: Letting us know with the help of a buzzer if someone enters
our house unexpectedly and other security purposes.
• In Home Appliances: Switching on the motor in villages when they are provided with electricity
with the help of Internet(IOT),i.e., controlling the motor from any place by using our mobile or
computer using IOT.
• Troubleshooting: Identify,Diagnose,Repair.
If there is any problem in the computer then automatically making it identify the problem, diagonising
the problem and solving it without the reply from the user(also called automation).
