In this presentation, Pranita introduces IoT and discusses trends that will impact us in the next five years. Pranita is interested in applications that are at the confluence of augmented reality and IoT.
2. Introduction
• IoT is a network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to
communicate and sense their internal and external environment.
• It has the power of creating a world of animism, where objects will have actual
agency. They will actually have a kind of consciousness and things will become
almost enchanted, almost alive.
• IoT promises to blur the distinction between self and the world.
• Humans have always been adept at dovetailing their minds to work tools. But
when our tools start talking back, then the loop will be finished.
3. Introduction(contd.)
• When everything becomes linked to everything else – Matter becomes Mind
• The world is going to feel like an extension of our mindedness
• The world is going to be intelligent and responsive and going to anticipate our
needs.
• We will have fully spread our minds into our universe and it will eventually become
a Global Nervous System.
5. Trends having big impact in next 5 years
• Transform business:
IoT will transform business into proactive, autonomic organizations that predict and
fix potentially disruptive issues, evolve operations, delight users and customers while
increasing the bottom line. 95% of the C-level executives believe that their company
will be using IoT in next 3 years.
• Smart homes:
Household appliances will be connected to the network, with resulting advantages
including improved security, remote management of devices and energy
management
Homes will be equipped with a network of all the appliances which would be
intelligent enough to carry out their own tasks without human intervention.
• Wearables:
Big Data and Cloud computing combined with Wearables, provide a new environment
to collect, process and produce information based on the data collected.
In many cases this data will be composed of multiple sensor readings and need to be
processed in order to produce valuable information or customized experiences.
Google glass is just a baby step, there will be more innovation beyond our
imagination.
6. Interest areas
• I find the amalgamation of Augmented Reality with Internet of Things intriguing.
• The tidal wave of metadata streaming from the Internet of Things will provide many
opportunities and some challenges -- one of which is representing it in a relevant and
understandable fashion.
• The IoT needs augmented reality, so that we can implement context-aware computing
solutions.
• If given the internship, I would like to work on providing interface to IoT applications
using AR and making the humongous amount of data collected by the IoT application
more usable and less complicated in the virtual environment as well as in reality.
