In this presentation, Samdish introduces IoT and associated trends. Samdish is interested in surveillance applications using IoT where image processing could be done by MATLAB and data storage can happen on cloud.

Internet of Things
1.
2. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with
• electronics,
• software,
• Sensors, and
• Connectivity
Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate
within the existing Internet infrastructure.
The Internet of Things extends internet connectivity beyond traditional devices like desktop and laptop
computers, smartphones and tablets to a diverse range of devices and everyday things that utilize
embedded technology to communicate and interact with the external environment, all via the Internet.
3. These connected “things” are producing large amounts of information.
By tapping into those data streams and connecting them to the cloud and back-end systems, organizations
can
• optimize business processes,
• make more informed decisions , and
• identify new revenue opportunities.
Internet of Things opens a whole new world for engineers and technology enthusiasts.
Its application in the field of environment can help us monitor pollution and take appropriate steps to curb
the world’s biggest problem ‘Global Warming’. Surveillance, indoor localisation, are some other areas
where IoT can be implemented.
Many such problems can be effectively tackled using IoT.
4. There is a shift in research to integrate the concepts of the Internet of Things and autonomous control.
In the future the Internet of Things may be a non-deterministic and open network in which auto-
organized or intelligent entities (Web services, SOA components), virtual objects (avatars) will be
interoperable and able to act independently.
Modern IoT products and solutions in the marketplace use variety of different technologies to support
such context-aware automation.
5. IoT is expected to takeover the market in years to come. The factors contributing to its growth are :-
Falling of hardware costs.
Software getting more advanced, enabling high level data analysis
Proliferating connectivity
Lower cost, and flexibility of cloud solutions
6. I’m specifically interested in surveillance system using IoT.
PIR sensors can be used to detect motion and thus, can trigger the camera to record video.
Moreover, image processing can be done using MATLAB.
Cloud services can be used to store data.
Apart from internet, Bluetooth, GPS modules can be added to improve connectivity.
Using sensors that can detect human body heat, etc. can help in increasing the accuracy of the system.
If integrated with automation, IoT can be used to innovate Home Automation.
• Use of various sensors, coupled with communication modules can do wonders in this field.
