ENGINEERING
 Definition: Automation, is the use of various control systems for operating
equipments with minimal or reduced human intervention.
 Automation assures high precision, mass production in less time with minimum cost.
 Advantages : Automation enables us to incorporate
accuracy, consistency and safety into a system while
reducing its cost and maintaining its quality.
 Significance: Automation has been responsible
For the shift in the world economy from agrarian
to industrial in the 19th century and from industrial
to services in the 20thcentury.
Fixed automation (Hard Automation)
• Fixed automation, refers to an automated production facility in which
the sequence of processing operations is fixed by the equipment
configuration.
•EX : Machining transfer lines in the automotive industry, automatic
assembly machines, and chemical processes
Programmable automation (Soft Automation)
• Programmable automation is a form of automation for producing
• products in batches.
• The production equipment must be reprogrammed and changed over to
accommodate the new product style in each batch.
•EX: numerical-control machine tool, Industrial robots
Flexible automation
•Flexible automation is an extension of programmable automation .
• Reprogramming is done off-line i.e. it is the programming that is done
at a computer terminal without using the production equipment.
ROBOTICS : Direct
substitution of machines
for humans.
CNC: Is one in which the
functions and motions of a
machine tool are controlled
by program containing
coded alphanumeric
data
TRENDS
TRENDS IN NEXT FIVE YEARS
YEARS YEARSAUTOMATION GOES WIRELESS : Wireless technology and
the Internet will revolutionize automation technology.
•Installation and operational savings, better information , safer operations
will be provided by wireless automation technology in the near future.
RFID : The RFID technology will be used in library's for
t tracking and tracing, and inhibiting the loss of resources under any
c conditions.
• It can be used in supermarkets for identification of products and quick exit
from market without the need for spending time in queue.
ROBOTICS : This plays a major role in automation, as the
development in robotics, reduces human labor.
•Robots will be used in hospitals as receptionist and guides.
•They will be used as waiters and cooks in restaurants.
HOME AUTOMATION: It helps us to personalize our home in a smart
way by controlling lighting and temperature , security, door lock, home
appliances integrated phone lines through automation.
 In this era of Automation, an automated robot which can take care of the
medical emergencies of the people living in remote areas will serve.
 Many accidents occur due to human negligence. Vehicles with automated
driving skills can make travelling much safer.
 To replicate processes consistently and with better precision
or quality than a human.
 Motorized robots now perform dangerous tasks like working in
mines, volcanoes or in severe climactic
conditions.
 Automated teller machines provides faster
and more convenient banking services to the
customers.
 Online access to information has bridged distances
and broadened horizons.
 Automation has its branches reaching out to every field making its scope
boundless. Automation is one such tool available today, which can give a
shape to our imagination.
 I would like to work with flexible automation, often referred to as soft
robotic automation ,which would increase speed, accuracy and consistency,
and improve quality and scalability of production.
 As internet of things (loT) and big data are the major
breakthrough in the automation industry. If given
a chance I would like to work with IT automation
which plays an important role in development
of the country.
