Student Voice Survey
Marking and Learning
February, 2015
Student Survey Results
• 148 students completed the survey.
• There was an even split between girls (51%) and
boys (49%).
• Students from all year groups completed the
survey.
• Most responses came from year 7 (44%), year 8
(20%) and year 10 (14%).
• The survey was a multiple choice however some
students took the time to include individual
comments (76 comments made).
Marking and Feedback
• 60% of students stated that their classwork and
homework was marked either very regularly or
regularly.
• 92% of students said that they can see that SIR
marking mostly (25%) or sometimes (67%) helps
them to make progress.
• Students were asked which subjects regularly
mark work using SIR. From the core subjects
82% said English, 34% Maths and 48% science.
Other subjects that featured highly were History
54%, Art 39% and Geography 49%.
Marking and Feedback
• Students were asked which subjects provide
time to respond to improvements. From the
core subjects 79% said English, 40% Maths and
50% Science. History, Geography, French, RE, Art
and ICT featured highly in this question.
• Finally in this section, students were asked in
which subjects they understood their CW grade
and if they are making good progress. From the
core subjects 78% said English, 57% Maths and
59% Science. Other subjects that featured highly
were: Art, Drama, French, Geography, History,
ICT, Music, PE and RE.
Learning in Lessons
• 66% of students surveyed said their lessons
always or mostly started promptly with a
learning activity.
• 57% of students said that behaviour in
lessons was well managed and learning
was taking place.
• 47% of students said they were always or
regularly awarded SL points and knew why
they received them.
Learning in Lessons
• 48% of students said they always or mostly
find their lessons to be engaging and
interesting.
• 60% of students said they always or mostly
feel well supported and challenged in
lessons.
• 78% of students felt they are always or
mostly learning and making progress in
lessons.
Comment Highlights
• “I think SIR marking is great. The only
problem is that you have never got any
time to respond to it. Spanish is great
because Miss gives us this time. I would say
that Spanish is the best with marking.”
• “I think English is the best at SIR marking
and PE because the teachers set the
responses as homework.”
Comment Highlights
• “When SIR marking happens only English (Mrs
Green) gives me time to respond. She provides
us with green pens and highlighters so we can
reflect on it in the future. The response has to
be completed in the lesson and she takes in the
work and marks the improvement. This enables
me understand where I need to improve and
how I need to improve.”
• “I think Miss Pook is very good at handing out
Super Learner points!”
Comment Summary - Targets
Students have requested the following:
• More time to respond to improvements
• More Super Learner points
• All teachers to mark their books regularly
• Spend less time focusing on disruptive students
in lessons
• More time to complete lengthy homework and
then teachers need to mark homework when
students have completed it.

  • 7. Comment Highlights • “I think SIR marking is great. The only problem is that you have never got any time to respond to it. Spanish is great because Miss gives us this time. I would say that Spanish is the best with marking.” • “I think English is the best at SIR marking and PE because the teachers set the responses as homework.”
  • 8. Comment Highlights • “When SIR marking happens only English (Mrs Green) gives me time to respond. She provides us with green pens and highlighters so we can reflect on it in the future. The response has to be completed in the lesson and she takes in the work and marks the improvement. This enables me understand where I need to improve and how I need to improve.” • “I think Miss Pook is very good at handing out Super Learner points!”
  • 9. Comment Summary - Targets Students have requested the following: • More time to respond to improvements • More Super Learner points • All teachers to mark their books regularly • Spend less time focusing on disruptive students in lessons • More time to complete lengthy homework and then teachers need to mark homework when students have completed it.
