2c Formulate algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities to reflect a given situation and vice versa. (DOK 2) By: Deia Sanders
Vocabulary Variable – a symbol such as a letter, box, star, etc. that is used to represent an unknown or undetermined value in an expression or number sentence (equation). Examples: x, y, z Algebraic Expression – a mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols Examples: n – 2, x + 4, 4 + 3y – 2 Algebraic Equation – a mathematical sentence indicating that quantities are equal Examples: n – 10 = 2 or 5 – x = -6 Algebraic Inequality – a mathematical sentence indicating that quantities are not equal. The inequality signs are ≤, ≥, <, >, and ≠. Examples: x ≤ 4 or y ≥ -6

Algebraic Equations to Words Underline Key Words!! Make up your own problem!
Words to Algebraic Inequalities Jana made 85 and 82 on her first two tests. She wants a B average which requires an average of at least 85. What must Jana make on her third test to have a B average? Let’s break it down!! Underline Key Words!!
Algebraic Inequalities to Words 2x – 3 > 14 Make up your own problem! Underline Key Words!!
Additional Examples 9 added to a number 10 less than a number Twice a number decreased by 2 is less than 14. A number decreased by 7 is 5.
Translate the following: The sum of 25 and a number is 32. The product of 4 and a number is greater than 15. The difference of a number and 6 is at most 30. The quotient of 60 and a number is greater than or equal to 10. The cost of the jacket is no more than $25.00.
And more… The length of one side of the triangle is 25 inches The weight of the bear is at least 300 pounds. The distance traveled is at most 75 miles. The time necessary to complete the project is no more than 25 minutes.
