2. Objectives
The course is designed and introduced to provide a glimpse
of understanding communication from broader perspectives.
How it is related to media and society. Thus, this subject will
provide concepts, theory and practical aspects of
communication.
3. What is Communication?
Communication word is being derived from the Latin word “Communis”
which means to make common.
According to Oxford dictionary communication is a process of
expressing ideas and feelings or of giving people information
Language are the codes of communication
Communication is the transmission of a message from a source to the
receiver.
4. What is Communication?
According to Aristotle, “Communication is a means of persuasion to
influence other so that desired effect is achieved.”
According to John Devvy,“Communication is a process of sharing
experience till it becomes a common possession.”
9. Communication as a discipline
Communication as a field and a discipline grew within American
academic/university structures. Its history as well as its standing with the
traditional social sciences (anthropology, economics, political science,
psychology, and sociology) emerged in Europe toward the end of the 19th
century. In many ways Wilbur Schramm was far from the founder of the field as
the study of journalism and rhetoric or public address in the United States had
long preceded his establishment of the first graduate program in communication
research at the University of Illinois in 1948.

10. Summary
Communication establishes relationships and makes conversation
possible. Every message has a purpose or objective. The sender
intends - whether it is consciously or unconsciously -to accomplish
something by communicating. In this context we used to
communication for fulfilling various kinds of objectives, like to
motivate, to inform, to teach, to persuade, to entertain, or to inspire.
