COMPARISON OF IPV4 AND IPV6
What is IP???
IPV4 Addressing
IPV4 Classes
Why IPV6
IPV6 Addressing
CONTENTS
A way to identify machines on a network
A unique identifier
Used to connect to another computer
Allows transfers of files and e-mail
WHAT IS IP???
 32 Bit Logical Address
 Network ID
 Host ID
 4 Octets 0-255
 An IPv4 address is a 32-bit sequence of 1s and 0s.
 To make the IP address easier four digits written in separate periods
 This way of writing the address is called the dotted decimal format.

Ipv4 Classes
CLASS Range No. of Network No. of Host /Network
A 1.0.0.0 to 126.0.0.0 126 1,67,77,216 ( 224 )
B 127.0.0.0 to 191.255.0.0 16,384 65,535 ( 216 )
C 192.0.0.0 to 223.0.0.0 2,097,152 254 ( 28 )
D 224 to 239 N/A N/A
E 240 to 255 N/A N/A
IPV4 ADDRESSING
CLASS 1ST OCTET 2nd OCTET 3rd OCTET 4th OCTET
A NETWORK HOST HOST HOST
B NETWORK NETWORK HOST HOST
C NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK HOST
D HOST HOST HOST HOST
Class D addresses are used for Multicast groups
Class E are reserved for research work only
 128 bits logical address
 2128 = 3.4 x 1038
 IPV6 = 128 BITS = 16 OCTETS
 IPV6 address written in Hexadecimal form.
 One Hex digit = 4 bits
 HEX. BINARY . DEC
WHY IPV6
 How many addresses does 128 bits give us?
 340 undecillion addesses or …
 340 trillion trillion trillion addresses or …
 “IPv6 could provide each and every square micrometer of the earth’s surface
with 5,000 unique addresses. Micrometer = 0.001 mm or 0.000039 inches” or….
 “A string of soccer balls would wrap around our universe 200 billion times!”
 “An entire IPV4 internet for every star in universe”…….
Guesses
IPv6 addresses are 128-bit addresses represented in:
 Eight 16-bit segments or “hextets” (not a formal term)
 Hexadecimal (non-case sensitive) between 0000 and FFFF
 Separated by colons
