- What are the differences between industrial and commercial motherboard? There are several significant features. The most important one is longevity and revision control. With long life product support, customers can benefit from a lower total cost of ownership. Once the product is certified through rigid validation process, Advantech is able to offer the same product for, at least 5 years, or even longer product life. Strict version control guarantees that industrial boards retain the same design to ensure that installations will function consistently. On the other hand, commercial motherboard generally has approximately 12~18 month product life. With such short product life and lack of revision control, in fact, it takes you more resources and the cost to certify the product than expected. In addition, commercial boards usually don’t meet the special requirements to use in an industrial environment. Industrial motherboards not only meet the requirement of high shock and vibration resistance but also support an extended temperature range from 0 to 60 degree. High reliability is especially important for the systems installed in harsh environment, unmanned station, or 24-7 non-stop mission critical applications. Lastly, expandability of ISA and PCI expansion are, still, often used for most of industrial applications. However, it is getting less and less to have PCI expansions on commercial motherboard, not even mention to ISA interface, but for those legacy expansion, you can still find them from Advantech industrial motherboard.
