2. Waiting for Godot
Beckett was an Irish novelist,
playwright, theatre director and poet.
He was one of key writers who
belonged to ‘Theatre of Absurd’.
This play is written by Samuel Barclay
Beckett (1906-1989).
It was first premiered in 1953 and was
published in 2005.
3. Lucky
One of the major characters of play.
Slave and antithesis of Pozzo.
Addressed as ‘Pig’ by his master.
Lacks basic human intellect.
Treated horribly by Pozzo, “ Old dogs
have more dignity”
4. Lucky’s Speech
Critic Anselm Atkins: “ a paper full of
nonsense-water thrown splat in the
audience face”
Bottled up monologue from a silent
character.
Stage directions/Reactions
Vladimir and Estragon listens
attentively.
Pozzo is disgusted by speech.
5. Vladimir and Estragon began to
protest, Pozzo sufferings and groaning
began to increase.
“Hat” as a symbol of intellect and
control.
All of three overcome Lucky.

Becket splits Lucky’s speech into
three sections.
i) Existence of God and His relation to
Humanity.
ii) Man wasting away due to
distractions.
iii) Chaos and death as a result of this
