2. DEFINITION
The Teacher as a Counsellor
Today, we’ll look specifically at:
the teacher’s role as a counsellor.
In particular, we’ll talk about:
“What is counselling?”; and
“What is a counsellor?”; and then
“What are the characteristics of a counsellor?”.
3. DEFINITION
What is Counselling?
Counselling is a learning-oriented process which usually occurs
in an interactive relationship where the counsellor expresses
care and concern towards the person with a problem. The
counsellor’s role is that of a guide who helps facilitate that
person's personal growth and positive change through self-
understanding.
4. DEFINITION:
Who is a COUNSELLOR?
A person trained to give guidance on personal or psychological
problems (Oxford Dictionary)
delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or
long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their
wellbeing.’ (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy)
5. ROLES OF A COUNSELLOR:
1. Establish good rapport with external bodies
2. Carry out individual and group counselling
3. Plan motivational program for students and staff
4. Help the student to understand inner self (potential) and his social
relationship
5. Help the students to maximize his potential and capability
6. Provides the students information to parents and administrators on
the students’ well-being
6. DEFINITION
Who is a TEACHER?
A teacher is a person who delivers knowledge, assesses
and facilitates students’ participation in teaching and
learning process
Teacher is someone who gives anything which is good,
positive, creative and developing humankind without
expecting any rewards (Al-Ghazali)

9. Identifying Students’ Problems
1. Interpersonal Conflict
Students who have communication problems with their parents, teachers and
peers
2. Intrapersonal Conflict
Students who have problems in making decision need clear information to the
alternative solutions of their problem
3. Lack of Self awareness
Students who want to know more about themselves regarding ability, strength
and interest
