5. The objective of the game is to
make the ball to land in opponent
court or make opponent to commit
mistakes. In 1895, William G.
Morgan (USA) invented new indoor
game, called “Mintonette” , which
became volleyball. Volleyball was a
demonstration sport in 1924
Olympics (Paris) and became an
official sport in 1947 when the
Federation International de
Volleyball was founded. In 1949,
first Men’s World Championship
was played in Prague . The Men’s
World League was set up in 1990.
Today, a new form of
volleyball is popular , it is known as
6. The Game
It is a game of two teams of six players separatedby a net. Each
teamtries to score points by grounding a ball on the other’s team
court under organized rules.
7. Rules in VOLLEYBALL
There are a lot of rules, but these are
the most important:-
The players can’t touch the net.
A single person can’t touch the ball
two times consecutively.
The team is allowed three touches.
The serve must start outside the
court.
Blocking a serve isn’t allowed.
8. Equipment
Shoes:-
Volleyball is played both indoors and
outdoors. Players who engaged in the sports on
indoor courts are required to wear shoes.
The best shoes for volleyball play are athletic
shoes that are not bulky and have a nonslip sole.
The shoes should be flexible, allowing the
player to move quickly without slipping n
falling.
Volleyball Net:-
Volleyball nets are made of cotton and
synthetic material and are suspended on two
poles about four feet above the ground.
They vary greatly in price depending
upon the quality of the set. A set will include
a net as well as the poles and often braces of
the poles.
10. The Court Dimensions
A volleyball court is 9 m × 18 m (29.5 ft × 59.1 ft), divided into equal square halves by a net with
a width of one meter (39.4 in).
The top of the net is 2.43 m (7 ft 11 11⁄16 in) above the center of the court for men's competition,
and 2.24 m (7 ft 4 3⁄16 in) for
women's competition, varied for veterans and junior competitions.
The minimum height clearance for indoor volleyball courts is 7 m (23.0 ft), although a clearance
of 8 m (26.2 ft) is recommended.
A line 3 m (9.8 ft) from and parallel to the net is considered
the "attack line".
This "3 meter" (or "10-foot") line divides the court into "back row"
and "front row" areas (also back court and front court).
These are in turn divided into 3 areas each: these are numbered
as follows, starting from area "1", which is the position of
the serving player:
12. ServeA player stands behind the base line
and serves the ball.
There are two types of serves :-
•Position1
•Ace
13. Pass
A player try to handle the opponent serve or another form
of attack.
Types of pass
•Under armpass
•Over hand pass
14. SetThe second contact that team
makes.
Generally over hand set.
The main goal of setting is to put
the ball in the air in such a way that
it can be driven by an attack into the
opponent’s court.
15. Attac
k
It’sthe third contact a team makeswiththe ball.
Ideallythe contact withthe ball is made at the apexof the hitters jump.
Contemporary volleyball comprises a number of attacking techniques:
•Backcourt/Pipe attack
•Line and Cross court attack
•Dip/ Dink/ Tip/ Cheat/Dump
•Tool/ Wipe/Block abuse
•Off-speed hit
•Quick hit
•Slide
•Double Quickhit
16. BlockActions taken by players
standing at the net to stop an
opponent’s attack.
Blocking aims at completely
stopping an attack is called
offensive.
Blocking is classified according
to the number of players involved.
17. Dig
Ability to prevent the ball
from touching one’s court
after a spike or attack.
When used correctly, it is
one of the most
spectacular defensive
volleyball plays.
19. Antennas
It is ALLOWED to play the ball off the
net . It is a fault, if the ball contacts
outside net.
The ball has to travel between the
antennas when flying to the other side of
the net.
20. Ace
When the ball is served and the other
team touches it no more than once.
21. Sideou
tWhen the team that serves the ball makes
a mistake making it the other teams ball.
22. Live and Dead
BallsThe ball becomes live when
it is legally served.
The ball is dead when:
─It is grounded.
─It lands or becomes out of
bounds.
─Ball or PLAYER breaks the
plane of a non playing area.
─Player commits a foul.
23. Fouls
Double Fouls- occur when opposing
player commit violation.
Double Hit- successive or multiple hits by
a player.
Foot Fault-player crosses completely over
the service or center line.
Penalties:
─Single foul: Point and Side out
─Live balls, Double Fouls: Replay

24. Service Faults
A served ball becomes a service fault when it:
─Touches the net, server’s teammates, or
passes under the net.
─Touches the ceiling, does not pass through
antennas, or lands out of bounds.
When receiving team is out of position and
the ball is served illegally, the serving team is
penalized.
