This project means a lot to us as it gave us a lot of experience. We also thank the faculty of Surveying Lab, who co-operated with us in the matter of instruments. We would also like to thank our Vice Chancellor, Dean of Faculty and our University for giving us such great opportunities. Introduction Relief on a map enhances its utility. A map without relief representation is simply a plan on which relative positions of details are only shown in horizontal plane. Relative heights of various points on the map can be represented by many methods and one of them is Contouring. Contour is a line passing through points of known elevation or reduced level. The method of locating contours in a plan or map is known as Contouring. There are two methods of contouring by Direct method: Radiation Method (Radial Line Method) By Grid Method The Aim of this report are as follows: Perform a contour survey (by Radiation Method) of Parking Area of F and G Block of Sir Syed University of Engg. and Tech. Plot the Contour by means of AutoCAD. Prepare a Report regarding the Contour. Body of the Report The Students of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Civil Engineering Batch 2009 2nd Semester were assigned a project to perform a Contour Survey of different Areas of the University. Our Section i.e. Section C was given the Parking Area of F and G Block. We had to perform a Contour Survey on the field first and then plot it on A3 size paper on the Computer i.e. AutoCAD and then to make a detailed Report of the Contour. Method: The method by which contour survey was to be performed was Radiation Method or Radial Line Method. Radiation Method In this method, a number of radial lines are set out at known angular interval at each station and points are marked at the ground at convenient distance apart on the rays that are set. Spot levels of these points are determined by leveling. The points are plotted to the scale of the map and spot levels are entered. The contours of desired values are then located by interpolation. This method is convenient in hilly terrain with level stations chosen at high points so as to command a large area from each. On Thursday 15th October 2009, Survey Contour was performed on Parking Area of F and G block. Instruments The Instruments used in the survey were: Automatic Level Levelling Staff Measuring Tape Ranging Rod Plumb Bob Project Work First the Area was divided into 2 parts in order to perform two contours. The Dimensions of the Area were measured by tape. A centre point was marked as a reference point and was considered as the origin. The x and y co-ordinates of the points (where the instruments were setup) were calculated in order to locate the points on AutoCAD. Then the contouring was performed by Radiation method. Readings were taken from the central point at 30 degree interval. All the readings were recorded on a paper and rough diagrams were drawn. These Diagrams and readings were combined and were plotted on AutoCAD. The points of same Reduced Level were joined by a line making contours. An image of the area taken from Google Earth was placed to make it more real. The Radial Lines were removed leaving the contour which were required. A detailed report was made containing all the information about the Contour Survey. Problems The Problems faced by the Students during the Survey are as follows: Due to the Hot Climate the students got exhausted after the survey. Due to the Dust on the field, problems were faced in contouring. The Cars parked on the field were creating problems in taking readings. Plot the Contour by means of AutoCAD. Prepare a detailed Report regarding the Contour, containing all the readings. Conclusion The Conclusions of this report are as follows: The surface of the Parking area has many up and downs. It is full of Sand and Dust. The dimensions of the Area are 193’ x 234’. The total Area of the Parking lot is approximately 45162’. Due to depressions and uneven surface, rain water remains there for a long time. The Surface should be leveled such that the rain water drains. The uneven surface is also dangerous for people coming on motorcycles. Contouring Report

  • 1. Table of Contents Acknowledgement Introduction Body of the Report Method Instruments Project Work Problems Observations Observation Table Pictures Conclusion Aims Conclusion Contour Map with Radial Lines Contour Map Names of Students Acknowledgement We owe a great many thanks to Sir Asim (Lecturer), who gave us the opportunity of implementing our skills in a project.
