2. Teresa and Warren flog most of the wedding gifts and invest in their business,
including many expensive types of fruit and veg… but still have money left to spare.
3. So the rest of the cash goes on building a basement. Warren
moves the master bedroom down there, and it’s where they
stow the wine making machine brought back from France too.
4. With the bedroom gone, the living space on
the ground floor is really opened up. So, they
splurge on redecorating the kitchen/diner and
living room too. It’s a far cry from the dingy
little place Warren brought with Miranda.
5. They’re back to zero in terms of their savings, even a
little in the red; but it was worth it. And both of them
didn’t mind living a little dangerously if it meant
improving the house. They wouldn’t come to regret it,
not with their business picking up.
6. Ariette Vickers did not have a
good a nights sleep as her
neighbours down the road. She
had decided to bite the bullet
and tell her household the news
– they were to expect a new
houseguest. A permanent one.
7. She practises by telling the
housekeeper first. She takes
the news calmly, stoically.
There’s no surprise on her
face. But then, discretion is
part of what she’s trained for.
9. To her horror, her
father Harry knows
all about Annette.
He had Ariette
followed when she
took off, and had
years worth of
photographs of his
granddaughter.
Ariette feels
violated and
resentful, but a little
relieved too.
10. Over at the Baileys, the honeymoon period is slipping away. Teresa used the
sale of her old home to buy wine making equipment and is busy brewing her
first wine. Homemade vino will make far more money than raw fruit and
vegetables.
11. But try as she might, she is often
distracted.
12. Warren doesn’t seem to have much of a head for business, his record keeping
has been sloppy and Teresa has her work cut out for her trying to make their
business profitable.
13. But she is determined to
make it all pay. She’s got a
secure family life now, it was
time to get her business brain
back on track too. She’d
learnt a lot as a business
intern in Pablo’s company –
nothing much had gone to
plan since then but it was
high time it did.
14. Speaking of Pablo, Warren’s been
worrying about his possible infidelities
again. Teresa says if his concerns are
confirmed, he should tell Jen. There’s
no point depending on gossip
though, he should find out for himself.
15. He follows Pablo on one
of his evening business
meetings, and is
unsurprised to find
instead of going to
work, they are heading
to a club. With a blonde
he remembered seeing
from several parties.
16. Warren keeps a low
profile, watching how Pablo
behaves. He isn’t impressed, all
his worse fears have been
confirmed. Pablo is having an
affair.
17. He makes
himself known
to Pablo, and
leads him
outside.
Once there, he
confronts
him, which
provokes Pablo’s
anger in
defence.
18. Warren goes straight
to Teresa to tell her
what’s happened.
She isn’t surprised,
and lets him know
she’ll tell Jen. He’d
just muck it up.
19. She heads over the road, and awkwardly tells Jen what
she and her husband have found out. Jen remains very
calm, and quietly asks if she can spend the day at the
Baileys, so she doesn’t have to confront Pablo right
away. Teresa agrees readily.
20. Jen seems to want to act normally,
so the two chat the day away
about what they’ve been up to..
Teresa talks for at least an hour
about the garden to fill the time.
21. When Megan gets home, she’s
surprised to see her neighbour
sat at the table. Teresa quietly
explains the situation, and she
makes herself scarce.
22. That same night, a small
figure approaches number
7, Deasil Street.
23. She is shown to her
room, newly decorated for the
occasion of her arrival. It had
been a junk room.
24. Annette Vickers changes and climbs into bed. She has
never spent a night away from the boarding house
before, and it’s a bit frightening. She doesn’t sleep very
well. It’s hard, she doesn’t understand why her
circumstances have changed so suddenly.
25. The next morning, Ariette took
her daughter in hand. Up till now,
meetings between the two have
been limited to fortnightly
academic updates; Ariette
explains that circumstances have
now changed, they will learn to be
mother and daughter. Annette will
learn to be a Vickers.
26. Annette tries to speak
up, to say how happy
she is to be living here
now, with her mother.
Life in the school was
all she had ever
known, but she had
been lonely as one of
the only girls to stay on
in the holidays. Every
holiday… But she is
quickly interrupted.
27. Ariette is off on a spiel
about what it means to
be a Vickers. Now she is
a recognised
heir, Annette must be a
winner in everything
she attempts. She must
be beautiful, well-
mannered and well-
educated. She must….
Poor Annette is
overwhelmed.
28. And she isn’t too impressed with
her overly enthusiastic new
Grandfather. She wasn’t the
touchy feely type.
29. At dinner that night she got the
same speech about being successful
from him as well. She couldn’t
choke down her lobster, her sense
of inadequacy was so strong.
30. She sat in room, lonelier than ever. She thought finally living
with her mother would be the start of a whole new life. She’d
fantasised about being here ever since she could remember…
but it felt cold instead of warm. She missed the school.
31. A couple of days passed, and Jen
finally left the Baileys house to get
some clean clothes. She had barely
got in the door when Pablo
Jen confronting ambushed her, turning on the charm.
She agreed to stay and listen to what
Pablo, who promises to
he had to say.
clean up his act.
32. Over dinner, he talked about how
much he loved her, how he had
never meant to jeopardise all they
had worked towards. Their
marriage, their home together… He
had just made a terrible mistake.
33. Jen got drawn in, she
remembered the day Pablo had
proposed, he’d just stared into
her eyes and asked. It had been
spur of the moment, no ring, no
plan. Just passion.
34. And on their
wedding
day, they’d
been so in
love. It truly
had been the
happiest day
of her life. But
would that
mean she’d
forgive him?
