Transparency is considered an important value for effective and trustworthy organisations. The public expect it, stakeholders expect it and staff expect it.
But what does creating a culture of openness mean for you, and what practical steps can charity leaders take to demonstrate their commitment to transparency?

Transparency:
what is it and
why it’s
important?
27. National Housing Federation, together with tenants
• Purpose - Strengthening the relationship between housing associations and their
tenants and residents.
• The four actions :
1. A new requirement in our Code of Governance for boards to be accountable to
their tenants and residents.
2. A new charter setting out what tenants and residents can expect from their
housing association landlord.
3. Tenant and resident oversight and scrutiny of the charter with a report on how
their landlord is doing against charter commitments.
4. A closer link with regulation.

5. Involving before deciding
6. Communicating what we’re doing
7. Inviting residents to take part
8. Being clearly accountable
9. Responding fairly to everyone’s needs
10. Working as a team
11. Managing responsibly
12. Having the support we need

30. ENGIE UK – independent Scrutiny Board
Copyright CfPS 2018 @cfpscrutiny/ @jacquimck
ENGIE will be
held to
account for
the effective
delivery of its
Charter by an
independent
Scrutiny
Board. It will
report publicly
in an annual
report.
31. My three top tips
1. Link to your purpose – if it’s not contributing to your
outcomes, it won’t work
2. There is no silver bullet – requires board
ownership, involve others in creating the plan,
recognise the cultural as well as structure/ process
change
3. Be clear on oversight - show how you are being
held to account, report progress, welcome scrutiny
(ideally independent) and challenge, share the good
and not so good news
