  8. The value of the parts in a Dealership’s inventory is often its largest single asset. However, no Dealership has the budget or space to store all items in stock at all times. Inventory is held in order to buffer between the demand and supply rate.  Why hold inventory? Why not order a part when needed? To fill expected customer demand for immediate (off-the-shelf) sales To fill unexpected customer demand To benefit from distributor's volume discounts To avoid additional cost due to a price increase (The Dealership might decide to keep an item that is about to undergo a price increase( Since holding inventory has its cost, inventory levels should be monitored and overstocking cost should be balanced with the cost of understocking.

Following are a few examples to the strong link between availability and profitability: In order for the Parts Department to enhance parts sales volume through the wholesale channel, it’s important to maintain an efficient inventory level that will create the competitive advantage required for competing in the wholesale market. Minimizing excess and waste also requires efficient inventory management that reduces the chance of dead stock accumulation. Maintaining an adequate inventory level to ensure part availability can increase customer satisfaction and improve customer retention. Also providing efficient and effective warehouse operations in a way that matches and even exceeds customer expectations can increase customer satisfaction and improve customer retention.
