Notes de l'éditeur
My name is Leverne McBeth and I am the Reference Librarian in charge of the computer workshops at the Headquarters library (Spartanburg County Public Libraries). I have 19 years of library experience (public libraries and academic libraries). I also have 3 years of teaching experience at a community college.
Ice breaker Question – What libraries are here today? Raise your hand it you are from a public library system? Academic? Special Library? Teachers? Trainers?
I will demonstrate how SCPL embeds online videos into training sessions using websites and databases. These resources are being fully integrated in the technology training sessions at SCPL. I will discuss what has been discovered about how online video changes and enhances the teaching and learning process at the public library.
Icebreaker – Use Polleverywhere to answer these questions --- What type of technology training does your library offer?

Look at your library’s mission
SCPL – Create. Connect. Change.
Began with our current computer workshops:
2012 – Mouse, Internet from Scratch, Email 101, Basic Word (how to create a flyer), Basic Publisher (how to card a business card)
2013 – I added: Keyboarding, Basic Excel (how to create a household budget), Facebook
2014 – I added: WinWay: Job Resume Writing Made Easy, Email 102
2015 – I added: LearningExpress Library Series (interactive resources)
Mouse Keyboarding
Email WinWay
Word PowerPoint
Excel Publisher
Internet Facebook
What work?
Mouse, Keyboarding, and WinWay already had an interactive resource embedded into the instruction. Patron had something that they could take home and work on.
Patrons desired self-directed, hands-on sessions and online resources.
What does not work?
How much time is used to create a computer workshop.
Creating new Presentations
Creating Instructional handouts
Training Staff to teach the workshops
Researching Resources
Hear how Spartanburg County Public Libraries (SCPL) embeds interactive resources into their technology training sessions for the general public.
I am transforming the traditional library computer training sessions into lifelong learning experiences for patrons in Spartanburg County. Patrons empower themselves with online resources, such as LearningExpress Library, to enhance their technology knowledge by moving from the four walled classroom into the virtual classroom.
2012 – Mouse, Internet from Scratch, Email 101, Basic Word (how to create a flyer), Basic Publisher (how to card a business card)
2013 – I added: Keyboarding, Basic Excel (how to create a household budget), Facebook

Choose whatever format will suit your patrons and will fit best into the time and energy available to maintain the content.
In January 2015, We created the LearningExpress Library Series:
Basic Word – 10 am
Intermediate Word – 12 noon
Advanced Word – 2 pm
First Plan:
The workshop outline (time length 1 ½):
Create User Account with Patrons (patrons must have a current email address)
Show How to Use database
Demo Chapter 1 of Video tutorial together (Word, PPT, Excel)
Allow patrons to use the Database in class (give out earbud for free)
Pros:
Patrons can have access to the tutorials 24/7. (library card, username, and password)
Cons:
No handouts (I revised my current handouts to reflect the tutorials)
Re-creating the class projects (Student folder on desktop)
1st – I started embedding the tutorials into my PPT.
Pro. – The video reinforced the lesson.
Cons. – I had to log in to LEL every time I wanted to show a video.

Pros – print friendly and updated information
Cons –
Pros: The information is updated by Microsoft’s Support Staff.
Cons: Matching the information with the right Office software (Office 2010 vs Office 2013).
The official Microsoft Office website (formerly called Microsoft Office Online) provides Microsoft Office how-to articles, tips, training courses, templates, clip art, stock photos and media, add-ins for Microsoft Office programs, productivity-enhancing tools, and web-based services.
I use this information for my handouts.
Public technology training is successful when a student learns something new and is able to apply it to their life. You don’t need to be a tech expert to learn the practical skills for successful technology training. Learn about effective training techniques and provide interactive learning in a technology classroom setting. Includes classroom management techniques, preparation skills, and how to handle difficult situations.
Don’t allow the videos to take over your teaching/training session
