Dr. Denise Kern discusses Response to Intervention (RTI) and leadership. She suggests focusing on relationships, then innovating, inspiring, inquiring, and investing in students individually. Kern outlines a three-tiered RTI process used at JRES, where teachers first meet to discuss early intervention strategies at Tier I. If unsuccessful, they advance to Tier II with administration to review data and strategies. For Tier III, a vertical RTI committee meets to analyze responses and data for possible referral. Kern emphasizes taking care of people, saying yes, and preventing stupid to lead effectively.

Response To Intervention (RTI)
Tier I
Step 1: Grade Level Team Meets to discuss early intervention response strategies and possible types of
documentation
□ Define targeted academic or behavioral TEKS & goals
□ Brainstorm possible research based programs to be used for the progress monitoring/intervention plan
□ Determine the duration, frequency and length of the intervention
□ Schedule a follow-up meeting
Step 2: Decide how to collect data
□ Types of data:
o Student vs. Student- Response- Daily repetition, day to day repetition, length of time repetition is needed
o Student vs. Small Group-Response compared to similarly grouped peers
o Whole Class/Small Group response vs. Whole Class/Student response
Step 3: Send home Parent Interview Sheet or Schedule Parent Conference
Tier II
Step 1: Grade Level Team Meets with Administration and/or other Specialized Teachers:
□ Review Parent Interview documentation
□ Share data and debrief Tier I Response to Intervention Strategies
o Review targeted academic or behavioral TEKS & goals
o Explain duration, frequency and length of the intervention Show
o Share response findings of Progress Monitoring with graphs, charts, and work samples
Step 2: If RTI TIER II Committee determines that intervention strategies are successful, the teacher will:
□ Document the progress monitoring response in AWARE
□ Upload supporting data
□ Continue implementing intervention strategies and monitoring progress
Step 3: If RTI TIER II Committee determines that intervention strategies are unsuccessful, the Committee will:
□ Analyze and review responses to previously defined goals and corresponding intervention strategies
□ Brainstorm additional strategies, needs and/or instructional intervention strategies
□ Clarify Tier II (updated) targeted academic or behavioral TEKS and goals
Tier III
Step 1: Classroom Teacher will meet with Vertical RTI Campus Committee and/or other Specialized Teachers:
□ Review Parent Interview documentation
□ Share data and debrief Tier I and Tier II Responses to Intervention Strategies
o Review targeted academic or behavioral TEKS & goals
o Explain duration, frequency and length of the intervention Show
o Share response findings of Progress Monitoring with graphs, charts, and work samples
Step 2: If RTI TIER III Committee determines that intervention strategies are successful, the teacher will:
□ Document the progress monitoring response in AWARE
□ Upload supporting data
□ Schedule a follow-up meeting
□ Continue implementing intervention strategies and monitoring progress
Step 3: If RTI TIER III Committee determines that intervention strategies are unsuccessful, the Committee will:
□ Analyze responses to intervention strategies and review supporting data for referral to LSSP, Speech, etc.
