RELATIONS
CONCEPT LESSON
EXAMPLE
Consider two sets A and B
A={duckling, calf, kitten, puppy, fry}
B={dog, cat, cow, chicken, duck, fish, pig}
It is clear that the elements in set A are the young to the
elements in set B.
Therefore each ordered pair MUST contain an animal with its
young.
i.e. (duckling, duck), (calf, cow), (kitten, cat), (puppy, dog), (fry,
fish)
NOTE:
Two of the elements of the set B are not included in any ordered pair.
This is because there is no corresponding element in set A which is
related to either one of them.
Neither the young of the pig nor the young of the chicken are in set A.
Therefore no ordered pair can be made with these two elements.
Therefore, the relation which corresponds to the information
given would be:
{(duckling, duck), (calf, cow), (kitten, cat), (puppy, dog), (fry, fish)}
