Keratoconus Treatment

 Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition that
sometimes is difficult to diagnose. It usually affects
both eyes.
 Keratoconus is a condition which causes the cornea
to become thinner and bulge outwards, forming a
cone-like shape. It is a condition that slowly gets
worse over time but how quickly and how severely
it progresses varies from person to person.

SYMPTOMS OF KERATOCONUS

 Forcefully rubbing the eyes
 Vernal keratoconjunctivitis, retinitis pigmentosa, and
retinopathy of prematurity
 Enzyme abnormalities or heritable factors like Down’s
syndrome
 Prolonged use of contact lenses
 Leber’s congenital amaurosis, Down’s
syndrome, osteogenesis imperfect, and Ehlers-
Danlos syndrome
CAUSES OF KERATOCONUS

 Eye refraction - In this test your eye doctor uses special equipment
that measures your eyes to check for vision problems. Doctors may use
a hand-held instrument (retinoscope) or phoropter to evaluate your
eyes.
 Slit-lamp examination. In this test your doctor directs a vertical beam
of light on the surface of your eye and uses a low-powered microscope
to view your eye to evaluate the shape of your cornea.
 Keratometry. In this test your eye doctor focuses a circle of light on
your cornea and measures the reflection to determine the basic shape
of your cornea.
 Computerized corneal mapping - Special photographic tests (optical
coherence tomography & corneal topography) record images of your
cornea to create a detailed shape map of your cornea's surface & also
its thickness.
DIAGNOSTICS OF KERATOCONUS

1. Corneal Collagen Crosslinking (CXL)
Corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) is a latest procedure to treat
keratoconus. The aim of CXL is to decrease the progression of
keratoconus. Crosslinking utilizes riboflavin drops (Vitamin B2)
and ultraviolet light which interact with the corneal tissue to
create “crosslinks” between corneal proteins.
Corneal cross-linking adds more cross-links to the cornea,
stabilizing and holding its shape. The new cross-links stop the
cornea from continuing to thin, thus preventing further loss of
vision and decreasing or eliminating the need for a corneal
transplant at some point.

2. Corneal Transplantation
Corneal transplant is a procedure in which a donor cornea is
used to replace either the full thickness or partial thickness of
your damaged cornea. The cornea is an essential structure for
focusing the light that enters the eye. Corneal transplantation
may be full thickness or partial thickness, depending on which
part of your cornea is damaged.
In a full thickness corneal transplantation , a small disc of
tissue is removed from your cornea and another disc of tissue
(called the donor button), is sutured into place. The donor
button comes from a donor cornea via the organ donation
program. Alternatively, you may have a partial thickness graft.
