Stereotyping, Prejudice and Discrimination
Question 1
Choose one of the following tasks;
1. Watch a movie or a documentary related to either stereotype, prejudice and
discrimination OR ways to reduce stereotype, prejudice and discrimination
2. Identify a song related to either stereotype, prejudice and/or discrimination OR ways
to reduce stereotype, prejudice and discrimination
Describe five points how stereotype, prejudice and/or discrimination OR ways to reduce
stereotype, prejudice and discrimination in the movie / documentary or song is reflected.
1.
"Hewas a punk.
She did ballet.
What more can I say?
He wanted her.
She'd never tell.
Secretly she wanted him as well.
And all of her friends
Stuck up their nose.
And they had a problem with his baggy clothes."
The lyrics above show discrimination of the male mentioned in the song based on his clothing, interest
and habits.
2.
"Hewas a skater boy, she said, "See ya later, boy."
He wasn't good enough for her.
She had a pretty face but her head was up in space.
Title of the movie / documentary / song
"Sk8ter Boi" - Avril Lavigne

She needed to come back down to earth.
Discrimination is shown here again; the girl refuses to accept the boy because she thinks he isn't 'good
enough for her'
3.
"Too bad that you couldn't see...
See that man that boy could be.
There is more than meets the eye,
I see the soul that is inside.
These lyrics are help break the judgement placed on the boy. The singer sings about how the outer
appearance of the boy in the past doesn't mean that he is who the girl thought he was, or he was to
become.
4.
"Hewas a skater boy, she said, "See ya later, boy."
He wasn't good enough for her.
Now he's a superstar
Slammin' on his guitar
Does your pretty face see what he's worth?
The words above show that the boy has broken free from the girl's judgement on him, and he has
become someone else even though she thought he wasn't worth her time.
5.
"Five years from now, she sits at home feeding the baby, she's all alone.
She turns on TV and guess who she sees?
Skater boy rockin' up MTV.
She calls up her friends.
They already know.
And they've all got tickets to see his show.
She tags along, stands in the crowd.
Looks up at the man that she turned down."
The words convey that after all the time that has passed, who the characters were when they were
younger didn't contribute to their potential futures. The girl, despite being 'perfect', has not made herself
worthy of much ("all alone"), whilst the boy, who was considered "not good enough" became the "man
that she turned down".
