4. DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS IN A
CARTESIAN PLANE
a) Points with common y-coordinates
- Find the distance between the points
A(4,2) and B(9,2)
AB = 9-4
= 5units
- Plot the points A and B in a Cartesian plane and
note that AB is parallel to the x-axis

5. b) Points with common x-coordinates
- Find the distance between points M(-7,3)
and N(-7, 7)
MN = 7-3
= 5 units
- Plot the points M and N in a Cartesian plane and note that
MN is parallel to the y-axis

= 4-2
= 2 units
b) S(-4,-7) and T(-4,2)
= 2-(-7)
= 9 units
c) D (-4,9) and E(-12,9)
= -4-(-12)
= 8 units
