2. TO PLOT POINTS, GIVEN THE COORDINATES AND
THE SCALES
Plot the points E (3,4), F (6, - 4) and H (-3,12) given
the scales for the x-axis and y-axis are 1:3 and 1:4.

3. TO POSE AND SOLVE PROBLEMS INVOLVING
COORDINATES
Name the shape formed by the points D (0,3),
E(2,0), F(0,-3) and G(-2,0). Plot the points.
4. DISTANCE BETWEEN TWO POINTS IN A
CARTESIAN PLANE
a) Points with common y-coordinates
- Find the distance between the points
A(4,2) and B(9,2)
AB = 9-4
= 5units
- Plot the points A and B in a Cartesian plane and
note that AB is parallel to the x-axis
5. b) Points with common x-coordinates
- Find the distance between points M(-7,3)
and N(-7, 7)
MN = 7-3
= 5 units
- Plot the points M and N in a Cartesian plane and note that
MN is parallel to the y-axis
6. EXAMPLE
a) Q(2,3) and R(4,3)
= 4-2
= 2 units
b) S(-4,-7) and T(-4,2)
= 2-(-7)
= 9 units
c) D (-4,9) and E(-12,9)
= -4-(-12)
= 8 units
7. EXERCISE
P Q Distance of PQ
8-4
a) (4,5) (8,5)
= 4 units
b) (-2,3) (4,3)
c) (5,-5) (-6,-5)
d) (3,-7) (7,-7)
e) (-5, -4) (-5,-8)
