Career History
November 2015 – Current Date, IPSL, Bootle, Liverpool , L30 4UE
Working as Senior Analyst in a small team supporting several Mainframe systems that
process Cheques for all the main Banks dealing with Incidents, User Requests and
processing any required Changes to the Live Systems.
This ensures that the daily schedules execute within defined timescales during the day
and I am also on a rota to provide out of hours cover if there are any overnight problems.
We operate using a system called REMEDY where Incidents and Requests are
registered and picked up by the team and resolved as quickly as possible to minimise
any delay in processing. All details relating to the investigation and the resolution of the
incident are logged with a full description of all the steps taken.
REMEDY can also be used to search if similar incidents have occurred previously to
decide if the same solution can be used again which then results in a much quicker
response time and it is also used for Change Management when any type of
amendment is going to be done to the existing systems.
There is a mixture of IBM and UNISYS CLEARPATH technology with COBOL as the
main programming language with frequent use of TSO/ISPF, JCL and ABENDAID.
April 2015 – October 2015, DECARE SYSTEMS IRELAND, Cork, Ireland.
Employed in a Contract Analyst/Programmer role in the Mainframe Support Team using
Cobol, CICS, VSAM, JCL and BIM-EDIT in a DOS/VSE environment on an IBM
Mainframe.
This involved working on Service Requests from the Business which was based in the
USA for a System that dealt with Private Dental Health Plans to process new business,
validation and payment of Claims from Subscribers and their dependents.
System Faults or Enhancements were logged in a system called Tracker and the Project
Manager reviewed them before allocating these tasks to a member of the team.
I was involved in the Analysis, Coding and Unit Testing of any required changes and the
Service Request also had to be updated with appropriate comments before it was
allocated back for Quality Assurance and User Acceptance Testing.
Once Sign Off was provided, the Software and any related JCL changes were promoted
into the Production System.
There were also regular team meetings to report on the status of current tasks and
manage the allocation of the pipeline of new work from the Business.
2011 – 2014, SANTANDER UK, Bootle, Liverpool.
Employed in a Contract Analyst/Programmer role since September 2011 in the
Corporate Payments Support Team using Cobol, CICS, DB2, PLATINUM, Control-M,
JCL and TSO/ISPF in a MVS environment on IBM Z series Mainframe.
This involved monitoring various fault reporting systems that registered problems and
failures with the execution of Batch Jobs and online CICS systems and responding
quickly to these incidents providing solutions or workarounds to ensure services to
customers and Business users were resumed as quickly as possible.
This covered a Corporate Pre-Production environment and a Production system which
used the Santander PARTENON system where speedy resolutions were required to
ensure processing could continue execute to stay within tight daily deadlines.
There was a Shared Mailbox where failures, problems and queries were reported and
tasks picked up from there by myself and other colleagues to ensure resolution as
quickly as possible.
There was frequent contact with other areas such as Operators, Schedulers, Business
Users and the Incident Management Team for serious failures that required really urgent
fixes to prevent customers of the bank being impacted.
Failures and recurring problems required thorough Analysis by investigating Dumps,
Program Source Code and utilising System Diagrams and Documentation to fully
understand the processing involved and then suggest amendments or workarounds to
resolve the incident.
All the necessary information was then passed to the Maintenance and Development
teams to enable them to make the necessary program amendments to correct faults.
PLATINUM and SPUFI were also frequently used for investigations into problems and
for provision of data if Business Users requested further information.
There was also a requirement to implement new or amended Software, JCL changes
and Control-M changes which involved liaising with Testing and Change Management
teams to promote the changes through to the Production environment.
There were also several administrative functions that needed to be done to maintain
accurate documentation that could be used in the future if similar problems occurred.
A system called REMEDY was used to report on the progress of resolving problems and
this also provided accurate details for management reporting and statistics.
I was also part of the out of hours Call Out rota using a laptop to login to the system from
home to resolve failures and faults in the Corporate Pre-Production and Production
system.
2011 – 2011, ALLIED IRISH BANK, Dublin, Ireland.
Skills used in this short term contract in an IBM Mainframe environment were PL/1, JCL,
TSO/ISPF and Fileaid.
Operated as a Senior Analyst / Programmer in a small team with the task of analysing
existing systems. My initial task was coding a program to provide a utility function that
would allow parameter driven enquiries to produce figures for accounts on the system
using specific criteria.
Reports from this program would be used by the Business to gain an overall view of the
number of accounts for each product provided by the Bank.
The next task required the identification and clarification of the processing due to a lack
of adequate documentation to allow the Business representatives to cross check the
bank’s products to verify that processing was operating correctly and as expected.
2005 – 2011, HBOS / LLOYDS BANKING GROUP, Chester.
Offered a permanent position while contracting at HBOS and joined as a Senior
Developer in the Delivery team. Involved in all aspects of the development life cycle
including Estimating, Analysis, Functional Specification, Technical Specification,
Detailed Platform Application Design documents, Program Coding, Unit Testing, System
Testing and User Acceptance Testing, Peer Reviewing and performing any required
Implementation tasks.
Developed and maintained Fixed Term Credit applications where the bulk of the work
was on the IBM Mainframe utilising established skills involving the use of COBOL, CICS,
DB2, VSAM, Easytrieve, JCL, TSO and Fileaid.
Participated in System and User Acceptance Testing for various projects where Quality
Centre was used for Defect Management and performed the role of Chief Coordinator
for the IT Development Team. I was responsible for Defect Resolution which involved
liaising with the Testing Team, Business Users, Operations and Scheduling to ensure
Testing was progressing successfully within the designated deadlines.
Involved in a long term project that was related to Regulatory changes to the Consumer
Credit Act. Initially engaged as the Lead Designer along with an Offshore colleague and
then worked on new programs and amendments that involved major changes to the
existing systems and the development of several complex COBOL/DB2 programs.
I also managed and mentored a small team of Offshore Developers for this project
providing them with work and monitoring the progress of their tasks. This also involved
reviewing the coding and testing to ensure Company Standards had been followed and
checking that the software was fit for purpose before progressing to the next stage of
the Testing Cycle.
My final project was the Integration and Migration of data from HBOS systems to Lloyds
Banking Group systems. This covered the analysis of existing Business functions and
processes to create Functional and Technical documentation to allow Lloyds to integrate
into their existing systems.
Performed COBOL/DB2 coding and testing tasks for the Integration and Migration phase
and involved in the System and User Acceptance testing along with the final
Implementation and completion of the Migration process.
