2. Raster Graphics
• Raster Graphics are images made out of
pixels. Images that are made using raster
graphics are made out of little squares(pixels)
that are assigned a color and form a picture.
Raster graphics use Megapixels, which means
how many million pixels the image is made
out of. The lower the megapixels, the lower
the quality of the picture.

3. Vector Graphics
• Vector Graphics are images that are made by
paths and strokes. Images that use vector
graphics can have a much higher resolution as
they are not restrained by pixels. This is why
they are used for graphic based work as the
quality doesn't diminish when it is edited.

Stands For Joint Photographic Experts Group
Used For/Example JPEGS are used mostly for pictures.
Advantage Every website can use JPEG images.
Nearly all Cameras use this format.
Disadvantage When they are edited and resaved,
they can lose quality as the images are
compressed to reduce the file size.

6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example TIFFS are used a lot for graphic design
work such as Magazine covers.
Advantage These images have the option of
lossless compression so it never drops
in quality. It can also save multiple
paged documents into one file instead
of a couple.
Disadvantage The file sizes can get quite large after
multiple edits and saves.

7. GIF
Stands For Graphics Interchange Format
Used For/Example GIFS are used to make short
animations out of pictures or videos.
Advantage They have a small file size, which
means that they can load quick and be
used on websites.
Disadvantage Most GIFS don't really have great
quality as they are compressed.

8. BMP
Stands For Bitmap Image File
Used For/Example BMPS are also used for graphic design
work.
Advantage Most images that are BMPS are good
quality. They also have lossless
compression.
Disadvantage However, BMP files are much larger
then a lot of other formats.

Stands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example PSD files are Photoshop files. These
are usually used for editing pictures.
Advantage You can easily change and edit
pictures in Photoshop. They can also
support transparency and saves a lot of
information which is really handy.
Disadvantage PSD files can get large quite quickly
after a few edits. There are also not a
lot of programs that work with PSD
files.

Stands For Adobe Illustrator Art
Used For/Example AI files are used for graphics work.
They work well for logos.
Advantage These files use vectors so the image
loses no definition after changing its
shape and size.
Disadvantage Only certain programs can actually use
or open AI files.

12. FLA
Stands For Flash File
Used For/Example FLA files are used for animation. Can
make cartoons and games.
Advantage These files can make high quality
animations due to using vector
graphics. They can also use sound
and video.
Disadvantage Unfortunatley, like AI files, only a few
programs can actually use FLA files.

13. WMF
Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example WMF files can be used for logos and
other small designs
Advantage WMF files can use both raster and
vector components. They can also be
resized and not lose quality due to
using vector graphics.
Disadvantage WMF files are made to work on
windows computers. This means that
aren't available to apple computers

Definition Compression is when an image is
reduced in size so it can be accessed
more easily.
Advantage Small files sizes can help with websites
as some websites wont allow certain
file sizes to be uploaded.
Disadvantage When the image is compressed it loses
quality. This means the image is
pixilated and cant be resized without
drop in quality.

Scanners can digitalize physical
objects like pictures, drawings, books
etc.
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
Cameras can store pictures that you
take digitally. You can then put these
onto your computer.
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
Graphics tablets give you the ability to
make digital drawings by using a
mouse or other instruments like a pen.

17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? You would optimise an image to make
sure that it would work with certain
programs.
How can you optimise? You can optimise a file by changing its
resolution, its file size or its Bit depth.
Advantage to optimising It can make the image more accessible
to more people by making it a format
that everyone can see. It can also
make it work with more programs
which could be helpful for you.
Disadvantage to optimising If you compress the image, it will lose
quality. It can also change the whole
picture if you change the bit depth as it
will reduce the amount of colors your
image can use.
