The addition of behavioral awareness to an environment of
excellence through habit allows coaches/line managers to
understand some of the key challenges in delivering high quality
performance guidance. It is no longer simply about trying your
hardest or being the best you can be.
Where is the next advantage going to come from?
The New Zealand Rugby Union identified in 2007 ,having failed
at yet another World Cup, that change was necessary to be
successful. They were happy with their physically and technical
preparation but recognized that distractions within the squad and
a lack of collective engagement had cost them ultimate success.
Their reaction? They concentrated their next quadrennial
development plan on the lifestyle balance of their players
alongside their physical preparation. They focused on building
an environment of excellence through habit. They introduced a
Mental Skills Coach who was not there simply to tell them to
focus but to listen to their issues and be a conduit to the high
performance coaching staff. They have fine tuned this strategy
over the last 8 years culminating in back to back Rugby World
Cup triumphs.
