Ireland has significantly increased its research output and impact over the past two decades. Irish universities are now ranked in the top 1% globally in 16 fields based on citations per paper, up from 10 fields in 2005. Specifically, Ireland is ranked 2nd in the world in immunology and 6th in molecular biology and genetics. Additionally, Irish research has had a significant impact in the fields of Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, psychiatry/psychology, and neuroscience.
