ABSTRACT
Monmouth University Multipurpose Activity Center as a Shelter – During Superstorm Sandy the
Monmouth University Multipurpose Activity Center was made available to be used as a shelter for
displayed persons. The MAC housed over 1000 individuals for over two weeks. The MAC is
equipped with communications and computers to support a performance and athletics space but
not a shelter. This suggests some applied research into what technologies should be available for
the MAC as a shelter in the future with an emphasis on the use of emerging technologies.
Computer Science summer interns at Monmouth University along with Professor Kelly defined,
developed, and created the Shelter Identification and Location System (SILOS). With SILOS,
they demonstrated the ability to locate a unique mobile object dynamically in a defined space and
to display it effectively in a form helpful to a user. SILOS was created using RFID technology.
RFID (radio-frequency identification) is the wireless use of electromagnetic fields to identify
objects by attaching electronic tags to objects and/or people. With this emerging technology,
identification and positioning on a dynamic floor plan display, also a student researcher creation,
was made possible.

2015 SCHOOL OF SCIENCE SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
SPONSOR RECOGNITION
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the supporters and sponsors of the 2015
Monmouth University School of Science Summer Research Program (SRP).
Their monetary gifts allow us to provide research opportunities for high school and
undergraduate students and fund summer salaries for them as student research assistants, travel
for students to attend conferences to present their research, and acquire the supplies necessary to
complete their projects.
Without their collective philanthropy, the Summer Research Program would not be possible.
