A Message from the President
I’m honored, privileged, and humbled to be elected as the new President of the Iowa Golf Association.
This honor is a highlight of my golfing career that I will cherish and fulfill to the best of my abilities. Following are
some stories that have shaped my views of the game of golf and what the IGA means to me.
I was introduced to the game of golf at the age of three when my mother, Jane, gave me a cutoff wooden-
shafted five iron. She asked me to play with her as my siblings went to play at the pool. My mother loves the
game and has been the greatest teacher of the game that anyone could ask for, never giving a putt and making
me play the ball as it lies. She taught me etiquette and the rules of the game: life-long lessons.
Another early influence was my babysitter, Bobbi Liechty. Bobbi was a high school champion, played
college golf, played on the LPGA Tour, coached college golf, and also sent two daughters on to play college golf at
Wisconsin and Indiana. She has raised a great family and the foundation of etiquette and the rules of the game
helped to provide her with the tools needed to succeed in life and with raising her family.
Growing up, my best friend was Ken Schall, and every summer we spent our days at the local municipal golf course, Byrnes Park. We
competed against (and with) each other from kindergarten through our high school years. He won most of the games we played making me
respect sports and pushing me to excel to the best of my ability. I saw Ken win an Iowa Amateur and we were teammates on Waterloo West
High School teams that won a state championship and finished second once. Our leader, teacher and coach Don Narveson, is a member of
the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame.
Ken eventually played his way onto the PGA Tour
and has had a very successful career as a PGA Club
Professional, teaching the game of golf and providing
enjoyment to many golfers around the state of Iowa. It
was a thrill for me to see Ken inducted into the Iowa Golf
Hall of Fame in 2012!
Golf has always been a family game for the
Christensen’s. Every Sunday afternoon since I can
remember my family has had a tradition of playing a
round of golf together, starting with my immediate family
and my grandfather. As the years passed this group grew
to include spouses, children, nephews and nieces with as many as 17 of us playing together each Sunday. Even as our children, nephews, and
nieces have moved on to college or careers and can’t make it to our Sunday games any longer, we still play on Sundays with a group of 8, my
mother leading the group and always playing the game with etiquette and by the rules, continuing the life-long lessons.
My grandfather, Louis, also made a point to invite me to play with him every weekday during the summer golf season. A very accomplished
player in his own right on the state level, he has always emphasized to me the importance of etiquette and playing by the rules in both
competitive and social situations.
I played my first IGA Championship 40 years ago in 1974 and have played in many every year since. I have watched and competed against
the greats of the game of golf in Iowa, from Ivan Miller to today’s generation. It has been an honor to walk the fairways with extraordinary
individuals like Mike McCoy, Gene Elliott and Jon Brown, who for the past 20 to 30 years have competed and won at the National, State and
local levels leading to the election of all three to the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame in recent years. I’m also honored to say that I have played golf
with Masters Champion Zach Johnson (before he was a Masters Champion) and the way all these great players conduct themselves on the
course has taught me about the etiquette and rules of the game.
I have been involved with the IGA since 1999 as a volunteer and I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to share my talents with the
organization. I’m proud and pleased to have been a part of the IWGA and IGA merger over the last couple years and I am committed to the
belief that the IGA exists to serve all golfers, regardless of gender.
I have goals that will challenge many of us in the coming couple of years. I want to see an increase in volunteer participation in the IGA, as
it has provided me with the opportunity to grow my enjoyment of the game. Volunteering is the backbone of the organization and expands
what we can provide golfers in Iowa.
I would also like to increase the IGA’s support for junior golf programs across Iowa and to develop new programs that will provide young
people the opportunity to enjoy the game for a lifetime and to share the life skills inherent in the etiquette and the rules of golf: life-long
lessons.
I love this game. I love the fact I have the opportunity to work with a talented and dedicated staff at the IGA. I love that I have had the
chance to volunteer and to work with Past IGA Presidents like Ron Van Buskirk, Leroy Oxley, Jamie Blackburn and Joe Kehoe, along with
countless board members and volunteers.
We all share a love of the game and my hope is that in the next two years I will be able to have a positive influence on at least one person
in the game we all love and in life.
Thanks for your trust and please contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas. I’m honored and I cherish my time serving the IGA.

5. The Importance of Volunteers
I’m a lucky guy. I started on my path to a career in golf administration as a volunteer. A good friend
and former college roommate was the executive director of the Golf Association of Michigan (GAM), and he
recruited me into the volunteer ranks.
It was the late 1980’s and I was living in Northern Michigan,
I owned and ran a couple of businesses which allowed me to arrange
my summers so that I could work with the GAM and the USGA as
a volunteer committee member. I attended a couple of Rules of
Golf Workshops and a variety of seminars on other subjects, and
ultimately I found my life’s work.
One thing this taught me, and this has been confirmed time and again ever since, is that volunteers are
critical to the success of organizations like the Iowa Golf Association. Another thing I know from the experience is that it can be a lot of
fun and it gives you a great feeling that you have contributed to something you really care about.
When most people think of volunteering for the IGA they think only about Rules Officials and some find that to be intimidating. But
the vast majority of IGA volunteers are not rules officials. They join a course rating team or come out to events as a spotter, a starter or
help out as a score keeper or shuttle driver. Being an IGA volunteer does not always require committing a full day because it is very helpful
to have extra help at the start or the end of the day.
As our new IGA President Tom Christensen points out in his message, golf is a family game and golf volunteering can be a family
activity as well. We are pleased to have several husband-wife participants as part of our course rating family. It’s a great way to help the
IGA with one of its core functions and the volunteers have an opportunity to play some different golf courses in the region of the state
where they reside.
I made lots of friends in golf in my volunteer days and many of the volunteers I have met since making this my career have become
friends. As a tournament volunteer for the IGA you get an interesting observation point to watch the best amateur and professional
players in Iowa play the game. If you have an interest in joining the IGA family of volunteers please give the IGA office a call!
Another Great Year
It was another great year for the IGA.
The highlight, of course, was the finalization
of the merger that brings the Iowa Women’s
Golf Association and the IGA together as
one organization. I will always be grateful
to the outgoing Presidents, Joe Kehoe of
the IGA and Carroll Dethrow of the IWGA,
for their leadership in making this happen.
The IGA Championships were as exciting
as ever and we crowned many great
champions. The competitive year was
capped with the crowning of a national
champion from Iowa when Mike McCoy
won the U. S. Mid-Amateur Championship!
Golf in Iowa just continues to get better and
better!
We move forward into 2014 with a
strong commitment to serve all golfers in
Iowa. We have an experienced and expert
staff who work harder than anybody I know.
Assistant Executive Director Chad Pitts
achieved a long time dream last summer when he served on the Rules Committee at the U. S. Senior
Open at Omaha Country Club. I have a feeling he will be on many such committees in the future.
Membership Services Director Jason Bjorklund and Katelynn Hogenson, Director of Operations
and Women’s Golf continue to provide the best in customer service to our clubs and members. I am
constantly amazed at their dedication and creative talents! They all make my job so much easier!
Finally, I want to sincerely thank the board of directors of the IGA for their continued
commitment to making the IGA the best possible organization it can be. Their passion for the game
is constant and will sustain this association in our efforts to “preserve, protect and promote” this
great game in Iowa.

Communications Committee Report
this core service to clubs in Iowa and Western Illinois in a timely
manner.
I’m pleased to say the IGA issued Course and Slope Ratings for
34 golf courses in 2013. At these 34 courses, 98 tees were rated for
males and 50 for females. The transition to rating courses for both
men’s and women’s tees in the same visit is now complete, providing
better service and efficiency for clubs.
Course Ratings are performed for a variety of reasons. Most are
re-ratings to update ones that are nearing their ten year expiration
date. SomeareperformedfornewIGAMemberClubswhopreviously
had never been rated; others are done following renovations which
changed the golf course.
Having current Course and Slope Ratings at a club allows golfers
to post their scores made from each rated set of tees and establish
a Handicap Index. A Handicap Index converts to a Course Handicap
based on the Slope of the tees to be played. A Course Handicap
allows golfers of different abilities to compete against one another
on an equitable basis!
I encourage any clubs or golfers who have questions about the
USGA Handicap System to contact the professional staff in Ankeny.
They field numerous inquiries each year and are always ready to
assist.
Have a great 2014 on and off the course!
The purpose of the USGA Handicap
System is to make the game more
enjoyable by enabling players of varying
abilities to compete on an equitable
basis and The USGA Course Rating
System is the standard upon which the
USGA Handicap System is built.
The IGA is authorized by the USGA
to do USGA Course and Slope Ratings.
We hold licenses with the USGA and
clubs submit their requests for Course
Ratings to the IGA staff in Ankeny who
works with a dedicated group of volunteers to provide this core
service to clubs. We have course ratings teams in the Quad Cities
area, Northwest Iowa, Pella, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Pella,
nearly 50 volunteers in all!
The IGA Staff works closely with each teams ‘captain’ to
administer the scheduling and execution of these ratings. The
staff joins teams periodically to assist in carrying out the on-course
portion of the process. All ratings are reviewed and calculated by
the staff and then issued to the clubs.
These volunteers are a key component to the process. Their
time and effort in giving back to the game enables the IGA provide

Let’s say Bob has a Handicap Index of 13.2. He plans
to play a set of tees that have a Course Rating of 70.0
and a Slope Rating of 120. By applying his Handicap
Index to the Slope of 120, he has a Course Handicap of
14 on this set of tees. For Bob to play to his handicap
he must shoot his ‘Target Score’ or better. Target
score is calculated by adding the Course Rating of the
tees played and the golfer’s Course Handicap. (70.0
+ 14 = 84).
Par, and the net score in relation to par, has nothing
to do determining what it means to ‘Play to Your
Handicap’ – think Target Score!
What It Means to Play to Your Handicap
The IGA’s website continues to
be the ‘Information Hub for Iowa Golf’.
As of December, iowagolf.org is on pace
to have over 150,000 visits and over a
half million page views!
The list of resources available at
iowagolf.org is extensive! You can post
scores, lookup current handicap info,
view tournament results, access IGA
Member Clubs listings, read information
on the Rules of Golf and the USGA
Handicap System, learn about members
of the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, access applications for the Herman
Sani and Ann Griffel Scholarships… and much more!
We will be increasing our video content in 2014. More videos
recapping events and with the unveiling of an IGA YouTube Channel,
there will be a growing number of brief videos on a wide array of
subjects for both golfers and clubs to access.
An added benefit in 2013 was the six editions of the E-Majors
Magazine that were distributed to all IGA members with an email
address in their IGA/GHIN member account. The E-Majors Magazine
contains content from top journalists, videographers and art
directors. It’s not a sales piece but rather of publication with engaging
and original stories, videos, photos and graphics delivered directly to
our individual members. If you haven’t taken a few moments to read
through the content of the past issues please do so in 2014. I’m
confident you will enjoy this member benefit!

7. It was a very busy year for the IGA in
the Rules & Competitions department.
In addition to fully taking over the
administration of all the women’s’ events,
we took advantage of the opportunity to
add two championships to our portfolio in
theHermanSaniTournamentandtheSenior
Match Play. We once again put on rules
seminars for Iowa golfers throughout the
year and recruited and trained volunteers
to help at our ever-increasing schedule of
events. When looking back, the highlight
of the year was certainly Mike McCoy’s
performance at the U.S. Mid-Amateur.
Mike showed all of us what perseverance and a “never give up”
attitude can do for you. In his 38th USGA Championship, with a career
spanning over 30 years, he became a champion for the first time when
he won the U.S. Mid-Amateur. Along with countless other Iowa golfers
I was glued to the Internet following Mike’s march through the bracket.
We all knew what this meant to him and hopefully he realizes how much
pride we all take as Iowa golfers when one of our own earns a victory
like that. We will now direct our cheers on his behalf toward Augusta
this April.
Not only did the win at the U.S. Mid-Amateur fulfill a couple life-
long dreams for Mike, but it also earned him his record 11th Iowa Player
of the Year title and the Senior Player of the Year title in the first year
he was eligible. He passed good friends Gene Elliott and Joe Palmer
for those titles, respectively. Both Gene and Joe were more than
worthy of being named the best in the state based on their tremendous
achievements.
Gene won his third Iowa Amateur title at Coldwater Golf Links in
Ames, a place that calls itself “Scottish-inspired” and that is exactly what
it was during the last weekend in July. Firm, fast and brown fairways
combined with wind and native, no-mow
areas to produce a playing surface unlike
any we see here in Iowa. Gene managed
his game terrifically and earned a narrow
win over Herman Sani Scholar Dane
Worley.
In the Senior competition. Joe Palmer
pulled off the rare double, winning the
Iowa Senior Amateur and the Iowa Senior Match Play. Palmer was in
a close race with Elliott for the Senior Player of the Year crown heading
into the Match Play and, as luck would have it, met up with Elliott in the
Rules and Competitions Committee Report
quarterfinals. In a match that most thought was going to determine
the Senior POTY, Palmer came from a 4 hole deficit to win with a birdie
on the 19th hole. Only a subsequent victory at the U.S. Mid-Am by
McCoy would deny Palmer the Senior POTY title. But congratulations
are definitely in order for Joe on such a fabulous year.
I also want to congratulate Ottumwa’s Matthew Walker as he
became the first person to repeat as Junior Player of the Year and
Steven Ihm for his terrific win at the Sunnehanna Amateur. You will
hear a lot from these two players in the coming years.
In the Women’s competition there was some outstanding golf by
players of all ages at the Iowa Women’s Amateur at Mason City Country
Club. Collegians have dominated the Women’s Amateur in recent years
and ultimately another, Megan Furnish, would claim the title, but not
before Mid-Ams Jenny Graeser, Laura Cilek and Julie Bush made their
runs.
We were pleased to see an increase in participation in Women’s
Match Play. After only six entries in 2012, we had a full 16-player
bracket in 2013 with Laura Cilek coming out victorious. We are very
excited about the future of this championship and expect it to grow
once again next year.
Katie Gustafson of Ames put together a string of top finishes,
including a win at the Women’s Four-Ball, to capture her first Women’s
Player of the Year award. Rose Kubesheski showed why she is one of
the top women players of all ages with impressive finishes each time
she teed it up, capturing her second Senor Women’s Player of the
Year award. Meanwhile, Karli Kerrigan of Ankeny just kept winning
tournaments. She won 10 Iowa PGA Junior Tour tournaments over the
summer and was named the Junior Girl’s Player of the Year.
As I said earlier, the IGA took over administration for the Senior
Match Play and Herman Sani Tournaments in 2013. We were forced to
move the championship from late May to mid-September when heavy
spring rains hammered Fort Dodge Country Club. The September
dates turned out to be great for the event with Senior Player of the
Year ramifications hovering over all matches. The event will begin to
move around the state as most IGA Championships do with Fox Ridge
GC hosting in 2014. The event will remain in the spring in 2014 but the
committee is considering a move to fall dates beginning in 2015.
Our first year administering the Herman Sani Tournament
presented some challenges, but it was a tremendous success. For
the first time in over 50 years the event was played somewhere other
than the Hyperion Field Club. We are very grateful to have partnered
with Echo Valley Country Club, Owner Mike Coppola, the staff and all
the members to put on a terrific championship. We crowned a very
deserving champion in Chad Proehl and, most importantly, raised a
good deal of money and awareness for the Sani Scholarship Fund.
It has been a great honor to work with the staff of the IGA. They
put in countless, tireless hours during the competitions and events each
year. The golfers in Iowa owe them a great deal of gratitude! When you
see them next year on the course, make sure you give them a friendly
hello and smile. They are The Best!
We appreciate the dedication and tireless work of our volunteers.
We have a growing group of qualified volunteer rules officials in Denny
Samuelson, Tom Newbanks and Mike Purcell, who continue to build
upon their knowledge of the Rules. We also had great volunteer
support for many other tasks from our host clubs. We thank the host
managers, PGA Pros and Superintendents and all their staffs for the
work they do in hosting IGA championships and qualifiers.
We are excited for 2014 and feel we have lined up another great
set of host venues. I hope you are all able to get a few swings in this
winter and we look forward to seeing you all on the golf course very
soon.

When looking back,
the highlight of the
year was certainly
Mike McCoy’s
performance at the
U.S. Mid-Am
for our members. We are starting to notice more golfers use the
GHIN mobile app as the preferred way to post their score after
playing. Over 27,000 scores from IGA members were posted via
the app from April through October of this year! Search ‘GHIN’ in
either the Google Play or iTunes App Store to download this FREE
app to your mobile device.
Plans are in the works to start sending text messages to
participants in our events and championships starting in 2014.
This added feature of communication will be utilized when the
committee needs to get announcements of a new development
(i.e. weather delays).
There are many avenues of communication currently in place
and we are excited about the enhancements and additions being
made to get you the information and tools you want and need!

At Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., Chayanun qualified for match play with the 58 seed after posting scores of 74-78 during
the stroke play competition. Cilek missed the cut, carding scores of 80 and 82.
Chayanun’s drew Canada’s Anne-Catherine Tanguay in the first round and found herself 2 down thru 9. She birdied the par-4 10th and
squared the match with a par on the par-3 12th. Chayanun lost the next two holes and eventually was defeated 2 & 1.
Lauren Diaz-Yi of California won the championship 10 and 9 over co-medalist Doris Chen of Florida. Diaz set the record for the largest
margin of victory in the championship.

Mike McCoy, 50, of West Des Moines and George Zahringer III, 60, of
New York, N.Y., each shot 2-under-par 70 at The Federal Club in Richmond,
Va., to qualify for the U.S. Senior Open Championship, advancing to the
championship proper at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Neb.
McCoy qualified for the Senior Open in his first year eligible. Following
an early bogey, he played bogey-free with three birdies the rest of the way,
knocking in a 12-footer at the par-4 fourth hole before making birdies from
close range at two par 5’s, holes 7 and 13.
“I had a lot of good looks, hit a lot of quality shots and drove it in
play on a pretty demanding golf course,” McCoy said. Playing in a national
championship not far from his home holds special significance. “It’s going to
be great—it will be neat to be that close to home,” McCoy said.
In Omaha McCoy posted rounds of 4-over-par 74 and 3-over-par 73
for a 147 total, two shots outside of the cut line for the final 36 holes.
Kenny Perry captured the 34th U.S. Senior Open Championship with a
score of 13-under-par 267, which ties the lowest 72-hole score in Senior Open
history. His 13-under-par 127 over the final 36 holes is a record, and marks
the second time he has posted a 127 to win a Senior Major title, doing so at
the Senior Players Championship two weeks prior. His 10 stroke comeback is
also the largest in tournament history.

At Lorton, Steffen carded rounds of 74 and 77 for an 11-over-par 151. That score put
him six strokes outside the cut line.
Jordan Niebrugge of Mequon, Wis. won the U.S. Amateur Public Links, defeating

Call it a three-peat. On a scorching hot day in June, Jeffrey Swegle
of West Des Moines edged out John Stroud, also of West Des Moines,
by one stroke to earn a spot in the U.S. Junior Amateur, Swegle’s third
straight trip. Swegle grabbed a qualifying spot in 2011, and made it as
an alternate in 2012.
At the Preserve on Rathbun Lake, Swegle captured the qualifying
spot on the strength of his opening round 70, and then held onto his
lead with a second round 75. Stroud posted consecutive 73’s to obtain
his first alternate status. Aaron Denucci of Clive was one stroke back
after his first round 71, but a second round 76 secured his second
alternate status. High temperatures provided little relief for the players,
who were required to walk the 36-hole, one-day qualifier.
A few days later in Wisconsin, Aaron Wirt became the second Iowan
to secure a spot in the U.S. Junior Amateur by posting under-par rounds
of 71 and 69. This was Wirt’s first appearance in a USGA event.

Tom Norton advanced to his second straight USGA Senior Amateur Championship
behind the strength of a 1-under-par 71 at Brooks National Golf Course in Okoboji.
Robb Pomerantz of Des Moines captured first alternate status at with an even par 72;
Joel Yunek’s 73 secured the second alternate spot.
At Wade Hampton Golf Club in Cashiers, North Carolina, the previous years
experience paid off for Norton. He advanced to the match play bracket as the 22 seed
after rounds of 78-73. Unfortunately Norton drew a tough opening round match with
USGA Senior Amateur
California, which is at an elevation of in excess of 5,800 feet above sea level. The course was set
up to a record length of 7,740 yards.
Swegle qualified for match play for the second time, posting scores of 74 and 75 and earn
the 47 seed. Wirt missed the cut after rounds of 81-78.
Swegle’s first match against Cheng Jin of China was a back and forth affair, with momentum
changing hands several times. They traded holes over the first nine; Jin was 2-up at the turn.
With three holes left in the match, Swegle needed a little magic. It came on the very next hole,
the short 284 yard par-4 16th. Swegle holed his approach shot for eagle to win the hole. He
followed that up with a birdie on 17 to square the match. A par on 18 advanced Swegle to the
round of 32.
Swegle would not fare quite as well against George Cunningham of Tucson, Ariz. After
holding a 1 up thru seven advantage, he lost the next three holes and found himself four down
after 14. An eagle on 15 gave Swegle new life, but Cunningham shut the door with a birdie on
16, defeating Swegle 4 and 2.
Scott Sheffler of Texas won the U.S. Junior Amateur, defeating Davis Riley of Mississippi 3 &
2. Sheffler is the 6th Texan to win since 1999, joining other notable Texans Jordan Spieth (‘09,
‘11) and Hunter Mahan (‘99).
George Zahringer of New York. Zahringer boasts an impressive resume which includes a runner-up at the 2008 Senior Amateur, low Amateur
at the 2005 and 2007 U.S. Senior Opens, and a member of the 2003 U.S. Walker Cup team. All square after three holes, untimely bogeys
at 4, 6, 8, and 9 proved to be too much for Norton to overcome. Zahringer advanced to the round of 32 with a 3 and 2 win and exit the
championship in the Round of 16.
Doug Hanzel, 56, of Savannah, Ga., defeated Pat O’Donnell, 59, of Happy Valley, Ore., 3 & 2 to win the championship.

from the Championship at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. With
Bull leading the Herman Sani Tournament after the first round, he
recieved a call from the USGA informing him of an available spot. Hours
later he was on a plane headed east.
Others with Iowa ties at the championship proper included
Hawkeyes Steven Ihm and Raymond Knoll, along with Cyclone Scott
Fernandez. Fernandez and Ihm received exemptions based on their top
50 position in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), while Knoll
qualified in Illinois.
Fernandez nearly qualified for match play. His first round 69 put
him in position, but his second round 76 at The Country Club left him
one stroke outside the 64 player cut.
Matthew Fitzpatrick, 18, of England, posted a 4 and 3 victory
over Oliver Goss of Australia in the final. Fitzpatrick became the first
Englishman since 1911 (Harold Hilton) to hoist the Havemeyer Trophy.

Iowa Women’s Amateur Championship
Furnish Tops Fellow Collegians at Women’s Amateur
Moments after signing her scorecard, a large crowd of contestants, volunteers
and officials applauded Megan Furnish as she hoisted the Fladoos Trophy at Mason
City Country Club, celebrating her victory at the 89th Iowa Women’s Amateur
Championship.
Furnish carded rounds of 80-73-76 for a 229 total and a two stroke advantage
over runner-up Alex Zenor. Megan’s second round 73 was the low 18-hole score of
the championship. Furnish, who recently completed her freshman season at Missouri
State, used memories of past success in this championship to propel her to victory. She finished tied for 6th last year at Des Moines Golf and
Country Club.
The University of Northern Iowa Women’s Golf Team was well represented. Runner-up Zenor was part of a trio of Panthers in the top 4, her
teammates Amanda Braun and Sarah Boss finished third and fourth respectively.
Mid-Amateur Jenny Graeser, a two-time champion, entered the final round tied for the lead and in position to add a third title to her
resume, but ultimately struggled, carding an 83 and finished in a four-way tie for 5th.
In the Open Division, Kelly Nelson won the 1st flight with a three day total of 236, giving her a six stroke advantage over Robin Webb of Clive.
In third was Janece Schwartkopf of Stuart, who recorded scores of 82-80-81. In the 2nd flight, Nicki Lamb of Greenfield posted three consecutive
scores of 90 to finish one stroke ahead of Mary Nelson and Ila Gilbert, both of Ankeny.
The Fladoos Trophy is named in honor of Jacque (Fladoos) Peters and Sharon (Fladoos) Smallwood, both of whom were inducted into the
Iowa Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.

Kubesheski Wins Second Consecutive Championship
Consecutive sub-80 rounds helped defending champion Rose Kubesheski to
capture the 48th Iowa Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
The 18-hole lead belonged to 2008 champion Beth Duenow of St. Ansgar, who
fired a championship low 6-over-par 77. Duenow and Kubesheski (79) were the only
competitors to break 80 on day one at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.
It was Kubesheshki’s third Iowa Women’s Senior Championship in four years. Duenow has finished runner-
up to Kubusheshki’s back-to-back title stretch.
In the Super Senior Division, Carol Dethrow of Nevada carded rounds of 85-85 for a 170 total. Karol Hare
of Johnston finished five strokes back to garner runner-up honors.
This was Dethow’s third Super Senior Division title. She won at Ottumwa Country Club in 2010 and at The
Preserve on Rathbun Lake in Moravia in 2011. She won the overall championship in 2006 at Lake Panorama.

Cilek Claims Match Play
University of Iowa Women’s
Assistant Golf Coach Laura Cilek won
the IGA Women’s Match Play title
9 and 7 over Karly Grouwinkel. The
final match paired the top two seeded
golfers in the bracket.
Cilek entered match play as the
number 1 seed, after earning medalist honors for a qualifying round of 3-over-par 75. Cilek’s quarterfinal match against Upper Iowa golfer
Christy Nelson was her closest of the championship, which she won 3 and 2. Her next match against former Iowa State golfer Kendra
Hennigsen, setting up a Cy-Hawk showdown. Cilek cruised to a 5 and 4 victory.
On the other side of the bracket, Grouwinkel was seeded 2nd after a 78 in the qualifying round. She won her first round match against
Meagan Bewley 6 and 5. Grouwinkel’s quarterfinal opponent happened to be a familiar face: University of Iowa teammate Anna DePalma.
The match ended in favor of Grouwinkel, 6 and 4. Her semifinal opponent, Iowa State senior Katie Gustafson provided a close match, but
an eagle down the stretch helped Grouwinkel to 3 and 1 victory.
While Cilek and Grouwinkel have played numerous times at Finkbine, this time the IGA Women’s Match Play Title was on the line. Cilek
started off hot, 3-under-par through her first nine holes. Grouwinkel struggled throughout the match, dropping eight of the first nine holes.
A lost ball on 11 by Grouwinkel clinched the victory for Cilek.

Black Goes Wire to Wire as Junior Girls’ Champion
Mackenzie Black of Independence claimed top honors at the state’s most prestigious
junior championship, the Iowa Junior Girl’s Championship at Ottumwa Club. Black
showed consistency over the 36 hole event as she carded an opening round 39-41—80
and followed with a 40-40—80.
Mackenzie tied for 2nd in the 2012 championship with Jessie Sindlinger of Charles
City, 1 stroke back of champion Amy Ihm. Ihm and Sindlinger are both currently on the
University of Iowa Women’s Golf Team. Black began her collegiate golf career in the fall
of 2013 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City becoming the second Iowan on the
women’s roster (Susan Kirschenman, Huxley).
Alone in second was M.J. Kamin of Cedar Rapids, who posted rounds of 81 and 82
for a 163 total. Taylor Rieger of Ottumwa and Rochelle Bearsley of Peosta shared third
at 164. Kamin and Beardsley have enjoyed previous success in the championship, they
finished in the top five of the 14-15 and 16-18 divisions respectively in 2012.
In the 14 & 15 age division, Amy Olberding of Cedar Rapids edged out Lauren Tandy
of Vinton to claim the division crown by five strokes.
Brooke Boardman of Waukee claimed the 12 & 13 age division with a 97 over 18
holes. Britta Snyder of Gilbert ran away with the 11 & under division, posting a 51 on
9 holes. Sisters Morgan and Allison Nuss battled for runner up honors, with Morgan
edging Allison by a single shot.

24. In Memoriam
Bill Rose, Des Moines
William Patrick Rose, 83, of Des Moines, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2013 surrounded by his loving
family.
A Korean War veteran, Rose turned professional around 1950 and started working for former PGA Champion
Johnny Revolta in Evanston, Ill. That’s also where Bill started to teach the game. He eventually got the job as head
professional at The Wakonda Club in Des Moines in 1960. The father of eight children with his wife, Robin, Bill left
Wakonda for a more stable living in the insurance business. The change in occupations didn’t extinguish his love of
teaching. He still gave lessons. One of his pupils, Mike McCoy, has won more major state championships than any
golfer in Iowa history. “He enthusiastically worked with me to develop my technical skills, but his real legacy was his
positive approach to the game,’’ McCoy said. “Bill taught me skills to believe in myself that I still draw upon to this
day.’’
Rose also served a spell in the 1970s as golf coach at Drake. In the 1980s, he taught golf at Dowling High School
in West Des Moines. The Maroons, never a power previously, won five state titles in rapid order. “Good players, yes,’’ said Robb Pomerantz of
Des Moines. “But Bill was the 15th club for sure.’’ Charles Reeves, another Rose protege, started a company called Michael Jordan Golf. Reeves
arranged a game of golf between Rose and Jordan at The Merit Club in Chicago. On the 15th hole, Jordan asked Rose for some advice. Jordan
listened. His next shot split the middle of the fairway. “The man (Rose) simply has a gift very few possess,’’ Reeves said.

Steve Lynn, Ames
Steve Lynn, 61, of Ames, passed away on January 16th, 2013. Steve joined the ISU Men’s Track team as an
assistant coach in 1980 and became the head coach in 1993, a position he held until 2007. While in Ames, Steve
became a very active figure in the golf community. He served on the Iowa Masters Committee the past dozen years
prior to his untimely death. He brought forward many ideas to improve the event.
In addition to his service to the Iowa Masters, he was involved in numerous other golf events in Ames.
Whether it was the Veenker/Ames G & CC Ryder Cup Matches, the city tournament or anything else golf related;
Steve was most likely involved.
A memorial stone was placed at the 1st tee at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames just prior to the 2013
Iowa Masters that quoted Steve, “Friends don’t keep score. They just do what is needed.”

Dr. Bob Gitchell, Ames
Dr. Bob Gitchell of Ames passed away on Tuesday, December 18th, 2012. “Gitch” was devoted to the game of
golf and his infectious positive attitude will be missed by all. He was 71 years old.
Gitchell had great success on the golf course and at IGA events. He was the champion of the inaugural Iowa Mid-
Amateur in 1986 at Jester Park GC. He also won the 1995 Iowa Senior Amateur at Mason City CC and two sanctioned
point events, the 1985 Iowa Masters and the 1987 Fort Dodge Amateur.
In 2010 Dr. Gitchell served as the Honorary Captain of the IGA Amateur team at the annual Iowa Cup Matches.
Under his guidance, the amateurs squeaked out a one point win over the top Iowa PGA Professionals at The Harvester
Golf Club.
Gene Eherenfeldt, BettendorfEd Wilkinson, Bettendorf
Ed Wilkinson, 80, of Bettendorf, passed away on June 20th, 2013 after an
extended illness. Ed enjoyed playing, coaching and watching all sports and he particularly
enjoyed serving as a captain for the IGA’s Course Rating team based in the Quad Cities
area. Prior to his illness he was involved in and led many course ratings over the past
decade.
Gene Eherenfeldt, 78, of Bettendorf, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November
20th, 2013 after having suffered a massive stroke the previous day. Gene was an active
member of the Quad Cities community who had a passion for the game of golf. Gene
had participated in numerous course ratings over the past few years. He also served as a
captain, assisting with the process of scheduling ratings and leading a team of individuals
through the course rating process while on site at courses.
The IGA is grateful to both gentlemen for giving back to a game they loved through
their volunteerism. The entire IGA family was saddened by the loss of Ed and Gene, they
will be missed.

Iowa Golf Association Foundation
IGA Foundation Goals and Activities
The Iowa Golf Hall of Fame was established in 1989 with the
induction of the first class. Five more inductions occurred through
1997. Efforts to sustain the Hall of Fame were suspended for
nearly a decade but the IGA stepped forward and revitalized the
effort with the induction of the class of 2006. Yearly inductions
have occurred since.
The Iowa Golf Hall of Fame Committee consists of representatives
of the IGA, the Iowa Section PGA, the Iowa Golf Course
Superintendents Association, the golf media and independent
members with a strong interest in researching the history of Iowa
Golf. Efforts are under way to obtain artifacts and memorabilia
from this great history in order to establish a permanent golf
museum for the state.

Organizational Notes:
Formation: The Iowa Golf Association Foundation (IGAF) is recognized under the United States Internal Revenue Code as a tax exempt 501(c)3 entity. Governance: The IGA Foundation (“Foundation”) is governed by a
Board of Directors consisting of the Officers of the Iowa Golf Association (IGA) plus three additional directors selected by the IGA Board. An unspecified number of non-voting “Advisory Directors” may be appointed.
Management: The day-to-day administration of the Foundation is under the authority of the IGA executive director with responsibilities mandated by the board of directors. The executive director coordinates and

The IGAF currently serves as host for two scholarship programs:
• The Herman Sani Scholarship Program is a four-year $2,000 per year scholarship
awarded to outstanding graduating seniors who have excelled in academics,
community service and have been involved in golf. Since 1950, 158 Iowa
students have been awarded Sani Scholarships.
• The Ann Griffel Scholarships are annually to high school girls who enroll in an
Iowa college or university. Since 1963, 213 students have received assistance. In
2013 the scholarship was increased from $1,500 to $2,000.
College Scholarships
Junior Golf and Player Development
• To create and support player development programs in cooperation with the PGA
members, golf courses and parks and recreation departments in all areas of the
state.
• To provide and support competitive opportunities for junior golfers.
• To provide young people with the opportunity to learn this most challenging of
games and its inherent lessons about life.
• To provide course access and playing opportunities to those who otherwise
would not have the benefit of this enriching game.
• To support and promote the game as a positive and healthful activity for families.
Turf and Environmental Research
• The IGA and the IGAF provide funding support annually for the Iowa State
University Turf Extension Service. This service provides important information
and scientific troubleshooting for golf course superintendents and their facilities
throughout Iowa.
• The IGA and IGAF provide annual sponsorship to support the Iowa Turf Institute
and the annual Iowa Turfgrass Conference each January.
• The IGAF will provide support from time to time for educational programs that
demonstrate best environmental practices and to positively address the game’s
agronomic issues. These programs provide educational benefits to the general
public, clubs and all golfers around the state.
Golf House Iowa
The dream to create a “home for golf” that is centrally located in the state is a long
term goal of the IGAF. This vision includes home offices for the Iowa Golf Association,
the Iowa Turfgrass Institute (ITI) and its affiliated organizations and for all other Iowa
based golf organizations that wish to participate.

Herman Sani Scholarship Committee Report
Who was Herman Sani?
• A member of Hyperion Field Club for over 50 years, where
he served various terms on the Board of Directors, the Greens
Committee and as Club president.
• During the Great Depression, Sani purchased Hyperion Field Club
for back taxes and gave it back to the membership.
• The Herman Sani Golf Tournament and Scholarship Fund were
established in 1958 to honor Mr. Sani’s passion for golf, young
people and Hyperion Field Club
• Since 1958, 158 students have been awarded Sani Scholarships
Herman Sani
The Herman Sani Tournament is one of the major fundraising vehicles
for the scholarship fund. New this year were hole sponsors, which gave local
businesses the opportunity to put their support behind a great cause.
Also new was the “Secure the Sani Saturday Night” event, where players,
volunteers, and supporters gathered to celebrate the tournament and the
scholarship. There was a live band, a putting contest that lasted well into the
night, and plenty of food and drinks for everyone. Come join in the fun next
year at Hyperion Field Club and help support a great cause!
New in 2013!
The Herman Sani Tournament was hosted by Echo Valley Country Club in 2013. Through the success of this tournament and new
endeavors, fundraising was more successful in 2013 than in any other year, providing a great start to the Secure the Sani Campaign!

On Monday, October 8th 10 hardy souls braved the cold fall temperatures and hit the opening tee
shots in the 1st IGAF Golf Marathon. By the end of the day these individuals had played 100 holes
of golf (a few more for some!) and raised nearly $18,000 for the Herman Sani Scholarship Fund!
To complete the marathon the participants had to play at brisk pace, executing golf shots with
nothing more than a quick glance at the target before swinging away. It was fun to watch this
process repeat as they completed lap after lap around The Briarwood Club of Ankeny. Pace of play
was not an issue!
It was a great way to spend a day, continuing the efforts to Secure the Sani!

School golf to six years by winning the medal in 1962 and 1963; she came back to win again in 1965.
Jacque also put her name on the Iowa Girl’s Junior Amateur once, in 1963. Jacque matched Sharon
with three Iowa Women’s Amateur titles with victories in 1966, 67 and 69. She almost matched
another achievement of her sister when she advanced to the semi-finals of the USGA Junior Girl’s
Championship in 1963 at the age of 15. Jacque was inducted into the Dubuque Senior High School
Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and was part of the inaugural class with sister Sharon of the Iowa High
School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2008. Jacque taught school for 34 years in Upland, Calif.
and passed away in 2008.

Edith Estabrooks
Dubuque
Amateur Golfer (Historical Selection)
The headline read “Little Miss Iowa Looms as Coming Star in Golfdom.” The subject was
12-year-old Edith Estabrooks of Dubuque who had played her way to the quarterfinals of the Iowa
Women’s Amateur Championship in 1933. Two years later she won her first of four State titles taking
the trophy in 1935, 36, 37 and 39. Estabrooks also proved herself nationally at the Western Girl’s
Junior when she won in 1936 at age 15 at the famed Oakland Hills CC in Detroit. Still a teenager,
Edith went on to a runner-up finish in the Women’s Western Amateur in 1938 losing to a future
LPGA and USGA champion, the great Patty Berg. In 1939, Estabrooks returned to Oakland Hills to
win the Women’s Western. In the 36-hole match play final she defeated Ellamae Williams of Chicago
8 & 6 which was the largest winning margin in the 39 year history of the championship.
Jon Brown
Urbandale
Amateur Golfer
Jon Brown has been one of the best amateur players in Iowa golf history. He is a two-time
IGA Player of the Year (2004 & 06) and finished no lower than second in the rankings between 2003
and 2008. In 2011 he won the Des Moines City Championship for the seventh straight time and
has nine titles overall. At one point during his streak of victories he reeled off 15 consecutive sub-
par rounds. In the three years prior to this streak, Brown was runner-up three times, giving him
a decade of finishing no worse than second. Brown has had 18 victories in IGA or IGA sanctioned
point events, second all-time behind 2011 Hall of Fame inductee Mike McCoy. In 2006, Brown
became the first player in 20 years to win both the Iowa Amateur and IGA Match Play titles in the
same year, the two most prestigious amateur events in Iowa.
