Solar Cookers for Haiti
http://en.loadtr.com/Map_of_Haiti-490851.htmhttp://www.lafeberconservationwildlife.com/?p=515
4200525173990
Haiti
Facts
A massive magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti in January 2010 with an epicenter about 15 km southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince. An estimated 2 million people live within the zone of heavy to moderate structural damage. The earthquake is assessed as the worst in this region over the last 200 years and massive international assistance will be required to help the country recover.
The native Taino Amerindians - who inhabited the island of Hispaniola when it was discovered by COLUMBUS in 1492 - were virtually annihilated by Spanish settlers within 25 years.
,[object Object]
Area- total: 27,750 sq km, country comparison to the world: 147 , land: 27,560 sq km, water: 190 sq km
Climate- tropical; semiarid where mountains in east cut off trade winds
Population- 9,719,932
Age structure- 0-14 years: 38.1% (male 1,735,917/female 1,704,383)15-64 years: 58.5% (male 2,621,059/female 2,665,447)65 years and over: 3.4% (male 120,040/female 188,690) (2010 est.)When Haiti's economy suffered a severe setback when a 7.1 magnitude earthquake damaged its capital city, Port-au-Prince, in January 2010, already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty, the damage to Port-au-Prince caused the country's GDP to contract an estimated 8% in 2010.
,[object Object],Why Haiti?
In Haiti they suffer from two major problems deforestation and they don’t have clean drinking water. [Deforestation primarily results from poor people chopping down trees to make charcoal to fuel their stoves. Women often spend many hours every day collecting wood to make charcoal. A simple solution is to provide solar cookers with instructions to the women in each household. Haiti has abundant sunshine, and to become sustainable the Haitian people need to make use of this valuable, free resource. Solar cookers eliminate the need to cut down trees for charcoal. The time saved could be used by women and girls to improve the situation, perhaps through education. An additional benefit is that solar cookers can be used to effectively pasteurize water, thereby preventing water-borne diseases. Solar cookers are an extremely cost-effective solution to the problems of deforestation and water contamination.] (Sustainability Blog: John Ayers)
Food is easily and conveniently cooked using the solar energy as the quot;
fuelquot;
in devices. Solar cookers are an ideal addition to any kitchen wherever there are predictable hours of sun many days of the year. Solar cookers are clean, convenient, non-polluting and easy on the environment. For millions of people living in arid, fuel-scarce regions of the world, solar cookers can literally save lives.
http://www.solarfeeds.com/energy-boom/10918-sending-solar-cookers-to-haiti
Solar cookers work by reflecting and concentrating the sun’s rays onto a black cooking pot, insulated by a clear plastic bag that traps the heat. These concentrated rays can boil water or cook most types of food.
http://www.energyrefuge.com/blog/solar-cookers-for-haiti/
http://solarcooking.wikia.com/wiki/Solar_cooking_frequently-asked_questions#How_hot_do_solar_ovens_get.3F
http://www.climatetemp.info/haiti/
Graph Of Cholera In Haitihttp://www.brighthope.org/get_involved/waystogive/haiticholera2010.php
We selected this project because we have a better idea of how to solve this problem over the others.
left0
This design consists of a black bowl surrounded by mirrors to direct sunlight Solar cookers can help solve two of the biggest problems in Haiti, deforestation and lack of clean water.
Current Solutions
‘Sport’ Solar Oven
4676775154940large capacity – holds 2 - 3.4 Qt. pots
long-lasting
efficient
highly weather resistant
complete kit: oven, pots, thermometer, manual, recipe booklet,WAPI (water pasteurization indicator.) (Reflector is optional.)
light weight – 10 pounds
stable (normal winds cause no problems)
low-cost
looks great
There is a reflector that increases the amount of sunshine going into the oven. The reflectors are designed for areas far from the tropics when the solar oven competes with cold air temperatures and a lower angle of the sun.
The Sport roasts meats; bakes fish and chicken; steams vegetables; bakes breads, cakes, and cookies. It even cooks rice, beans, lentils and pastas, with only solar energy. Using the natural moisture in meats, fish, and vegetables, the Sport cooks without additional water so all the natural vitamins and minerals are retained, giving food a wonderful rich flavor.
Manufactured by the Solar Oven Society (SOS), a not-for-profit organization, each sale of a Sport solar oven helps subsidize ovens for other parts of the world.
The Sport was designed by solar engineers to be used in sun rich but fuel poor areas in the world to improve the quality of life and nutrition of some of the 2.4 billion people who lack adequate cooking fuel and often cook with dung, charcoal or wood, causing illness for women and children.
552450-647700
http://www.solarovens.org/
Pros/cons
http://solarcooking.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Solar_cooker_plans
Panels deflect most sunlight into the black pot.
PanelProsConsEasy, fast, and cheap to makeLower cooking temperaturesCan be collapsed for storage or transportCan't fry foods.Doesn’t require electricity or fuel to cookCooks only 1-2 pots of food at a timeNot waterproofCan't fry foodsCan't bake breadCan damage eyesWeaker after noon and at temperate regions
Glass top to keep heat in and let sunlight through
BoxProsConsCan cook multiple pots simultaneously Construction time longer than panelCan be built from many different materialsCan't fry foodsCan be built any size to cook large quantities of food Can't bake bread Don't have to be turned to follow the sun while cooking Not waterproofDoesn’t require electricity or fuel to cookCan damage eyesSimple to buildWeaker after noon and at temperate regions
Parabolic design deflects most sunlight into the pot to create high temperatures
ParabolicProsConsCan fry foodsCan dry foodsDoesn’t require electricity or fuel to cookMore expensive than other models Cooks as fast as a conventional electric burnerTricky to make without imported materialsRequires periodic realignment to the sunCan't bake bread Can damage eyesNot waterproofWeaker after noon and at temperate regions
Materials that you might use.
,[object Object]
