This document outlines the requirements for a final digital assignment due at the end of the semester. The goal is for students to demonstrate their social media skills and knowledge through a "why hire me" blog post. The blog post should include: (1) introductions and credentials, (2) an explanation of why they are a social media expert, (3) reflections on trends and lessons learned from classmates' tweets, and (4) a discussion of two issues concerning social media's role in the world. Students are encouraged to include links, screenshots, and infographics in their blog posts.
1. Final Digital Assignment – due May 5, 5 PM.
The goal here is to do a final round up of the semester’s work, both skills & theory. We will do
so through a “why hire me?” assignment that reflects on your knowledge and digital skills. My
goal is for you to be able to spin this blog assignment into something you can use to market
yourself even if it’s off “brand” or off “topic” and just a fun reflection point. For some of you,
though, it’s right on target for what you aimto do.
Part I: Introductions
Who are you? What should this blog show to someone employing you?
Here, you have one of two final blog challenges—your choice of a brief 1-3 minute video you
have created or a brief 1-3 minute sound clip. (see smpasocial.tumblr.com for suggestions)
You may be brief in your actual text for this section.
Part II: Why you are an expert
Why are you a social media expert: Explain clearly, using bullet points, links, whatever helps you
make your case, in a brief section about what you do best on social media. (what skills do you
have?)—feel free to link/screenshot to any previous content & tell this visually! You can add
other relevant skills not specifically referenced in this class if you’d like (about 150-200 words)
Why you are a subject-area expert? E.g. why does this blog demonstrate your ability to
understand/analyze/etc. whatever area you’ve done and what does this say about you
beyond, say, murder mysteries or cigars? (about 150-200 words)
Suggestions…You may want to consider showing off your new abilities to do an infographic—
some of the most compelling resumes are in fact infographics! Make sure it can be read,
though!
You may also want to link to work samples created for this class-> I recommend trying to use
scribd or slideshare as a way to upload & embed your plan & calendar if you feel it’s up to snuff.
Part III: Trends people need to know
Reflect on three to five tweets of your classmates that taught you something you didn’t
know about social media—e.g. a major social media development/social media trick or
strategy/etc. this will probably work best if you embed the Tweets
Reflect on three to five tweets of your own: What are three things you’ve
learned/tweeted about that someone who wants to know what’s going on in social
should know?
Just because an event has passed doesn’t mean that you can’t project what this means
for the present/near future. Don’t have an absolute word count, but keep each “lesson”
from the tweets brief
2. Part IV: Issues that concern you/motivate you about social media’s place in the world
We’ve talked about a lot this semester, particularly in the last few weeks. You’ve also
done some intense reading and watching of key texts of this social media moment.
Please reflect on two overall issues related to social media (e.g. privacy, memory, identity,
activism, etc.). What might an employer need to know about these? What evidence do you
have that these matter (mention class readings/activities, for example).
Keep this brief & remember digital storytelling templates: this is your final statement about
your knowledge for someone scanning your work/resume/site (e.g. no more than 350 words)
