2. Abstract
■ Women and girls are suffering from a surge of
violence and domestic abuse. And we are seeing that
this gender based Violence is increasing online too.
Taking many forms - from violent threats and digital
surveillance to sexual harassment and the sharing of
intimate images without permission - online abuse can
have a devastating mental and physical toll on women
and girls. In cases of domestic violence, abusive
partners also monitor, track, threaten and perpetrate
violence with digital tools.

4. What is online gender based Violence ?
♧ Online gender based Violence is targeted harassment
and prejudice against women through technology.
♧ The term is also similar to online harassment,
cyberbullying and cybersexism.
♧ Online gender based Violence can include unwanted
sexual remarks, non - consensual posting of sexual
media, threats, doxing, cyberstalking and harassment
and gender based discriminatory memes and post

6. Various types of online gender based Violence
Online domestic
violence
( where perpetrators use the
internet to exploit the intimate and
private knowledge that they have of
their partner in order to hurt them.
They also use intimate photos and
videos to assert power and violence
over their partner. )
Cyberstalking
( This is another type of gender
based Violence. It has been reported
that 26 % of women aged 18 - 24
have reported being stalked through
the use of telecommunication tools
afforded by the Internet and media.

7. Social media platforms and Gender based harassment
Social media platforms generate unique forms of
abuse and these are a critical medium for gender
based online harassment. The national centre for
Cyberstalking research found that 63 % of
women reporting online harassment through
social networking sites.
● Another survey found that social media is the most common venue for all types
of online harassment with young women experiences the most severe form of
harassment at disproportionately higher level than other groups.
8. ♧ In 2009 the U.K launched the National Centre for Cyberstalking
Research ( NCCR ) which aims to provide Research and analysis into
the prevalence, motivations, impact and risk assessment of cyber
VAWG.
♧ From July 2017, Slovenia had launched the project “
CYBERVAW” which aims to develop awareness raising and
education activities that spread a clear message of Zero tolerance
to VAWG with a specific focus on prevention of gender based
Violence and harassment as a form of VAWG.
