  4. 4. SATIRE IN FIRST PART OF THE BOOK THE LAND OF LILLIPUT • It is a satire on Politicians, Scientists, Philosophers and Englishmen. • First part of Gulliver’s travels is “ A Voyage to Lilliput.” • Lemuel Gulliver is Shipwrecked and Swims for his life, gets safe on the shoar in the country of Lilliput is made a prisoner and carried up the country
  5. 5. “ Arms and legs were strongly fastened on each side to the ground; and hair which was long and thick, tied down in the same manner. A human creature not six inches high, with a Bow and Arrows in his hand, and a Quiver at his Back.” ● By emphasizing the six inch hight of the Lilliputians, he graphically diminishes the stature of politicians and indeed the Stature of all human nature.
  6. 6. • Jonathan Swift Satirising the pettiness of human nature in general and attacking the Whigs in perticular. • And in using the fire in the Queen‘s chamber, the rope dancer, the bill of perticulars drawn against Gulliver and the inventory of Gulliver’s pocket, he presented a series of allusion that were identifiable to his contemporaries as critical of Whig politics. • This hatred began when Swift entered politics as the representative of the Irish church. • Representing the Irish bishops Swift tried to get Queen Anne and the Whigs to grant some financial aid to the Irish Church. • They refused, Swift turned against them and he worked for Sir William Temple.
  7. 7. • Swift turned to the Tories for political allegiance and devoted his propaganda talents to their services. • Swift also wants to say that Lilliputian folly was also English folly, and particularly, Whig folly. • Gulliver is utterly incapable of the stupidity of the Lilliputian politicians, and therefore he and the Lilliputians are ever present contrast for us. • We are always aware of the difference between the imperfect moral life of Gulliver and the petty and stupid political life of emperors, Prime ministers and informers.
