Christian leaders rebuked introduction of images of Christ & saints into their worship. 36th Canon of the Synod of Elvira prohibited images. Eusebius, father of Church history, opposed them. Ambrose, Jerome, & Augustine mention pictures of apostles & Christ & the worship of images as beginning in their day. Eastern influence -Use & adoration of images began
75. Lateran Synod sanctioned their use in A.D. 769. Tarsius, an advocate of images, made patriarch of the East in A.D. 784; A.D. 787, Synod of Nicea ascribed reverence to images & worship to God. Synod of Frankfurt in A.D 794, & sanctioned at Paris in A.D. 825. Emperors in the East continued their opposition & advocates of images were exiled for some time. Images restored in the area of Theodora in A.D. 843.

Blessings were claimed for the images themselves finally in A.D. 1188, it was declared that denial of images was a denial of God. In A.D. 1225 it was said that Christ was not Christ unless He was graven as an image or statue. Thomas Aquinas in A.D. 1265 declared that an image of Christ claims the same veneration as Christ Himself. The 25th session of the Council of Trent held during 1551-52 justified the worship of images.
