DoT has powers to cancel licenses of mobile phone cos in circles where they have not launched services even a year after getting the license.
7. Bankers, retailers seek fee cut in debit card processing Retailers and a section of the banking industry are keen on the reduction of fees which will increase the utilisation of debit cards. The report has recommended that as against the present Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charged to retailers, banks should be allowed to charge at the most 0.2% fees on debit card transactions which should not be passed on to customers. Banks generate an income of Rs 1340 crore a year through MDR – the fees charged to merchants to process card payments.
8. Contd… Banks have issued 19 crore debit cards but these cards are used for payments for an average once a year. There are 1.9 crore credit cards which see 11 transactions a year. The suggestions if accepted will increase acceptance and usage of debit cards and bring down the relevance of cash in the system.

Punjab National Bank charts plans for overseas expansion PNB plans for expansion in the central Asian country of Kazakhstan with the decision to acquire a 64% stake in JSC Dana Bank for $24 million by 2010. PNB has global presence in 9 countries with branches at Hong Kong, Kabul, Dubai, Almaty, Shanghai, Norway, representative offices in China and having a subsidiary in London with 5 branches. Bank will shortly start its subsidiary in Canada to tap huge Punjabi population.

Telecom revenue in metros reaching saturation levels Latest data collected by TRAI for the June quarter shows that overall revenue in metro cities fell 0.2% owing to an 8% fall in Mumbai from the preceding quarter. Revenues from ‘A’ circle grew merely 3.6%. Metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata account for 16% of sector’s total revenue. Reason is that the subscriber additions no long compensate for falling rates.
