At Parse we have developed a workflow that lets us repeatedly capture and replay real production workloads offline. This has allowed us to confidently perform upgrades across a large fleet with a minimum amount of canarying, and has helped us load test a variety of storage engines with real workloads so we can compare and understand the performance tradeoffs. In this talk we will cover best practices for upgrades and migrations, and we will walk through how to use our open-sourced tooling to demonstrate how you can do the same. We will also share some fun war stories about various disasters found and averted *before* putting them into production thanks to offline benchmarking."

"To provide exceptional customer experiences at scale, the data pipelines that can move data reliably across the systems and applications in real-time should be seamlessly scalable. For the past several years, we relied on Message Queue based data pipelines to facilitate the transfer of data across the applications. However, as the number of use cases that require real-time data transfer increased rapidly, it became difficult to scale the messaging platform. Moving to Kafka helped us to resolve the data pipeline scaling issues and reduce the Publisher/Subscriber on-boarding time from several weeks to a few days. To support the on-demand scaling of Kafka clusters, we run them on RedHat OpenShift, an Enterprise Kubernetes. While managing Kafka that handles critical financial events, we have learned some lessons and developed efficient strategies to manage production-grade Kafka clusters on OpenShift. In this talk, we will present: 1. Some of the challenges that we faced with Kafka on OpenShift and how we evolved our infrastructure to overcome them. 2. Share our experiences from operating Kafka clusters at Scale in Production. 3. Our strategy for performing automated Kafka deployment and rollback in OpenShift. 4. Explain our fail-over strategy using Confluent’s Replicator to ensure service availability during cluster failures."

Tools like AWS’s Lambda, Google's Cloud Functions, and many others are allowing us to create “serverless” applications. At Bustle (a top 30 website in the US) we are taking full advantage of this new infrastructure. APIs, databases, searching, indexing, server side rendered javascript, are all being handled without deploying any of our own servers. And the best part? It costs orders of magnitude less than our old VM based deployments. I’ll walk attendees through our entire serverless stack. I'll talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly. I'll share real numbers from production systems. The goal is that attendees will leave with concrete knowledge of what going serverless really means and be able to decide if it makes sense for their own infrastructure.

When building a large enough set of services using node.js, there will be a point when you find that your application is suffering from performance or memory issues. When this happens, you have to roll up your sleeves, get your tools and start digging. Despite that its event loop that is key to Node's scalability and performance, it remains a misunderstood black box to many. After providing an overview of state of the art real-time machine learning algorithms, we discuss how these algorithms can be leveraged from within a Node.js application. The built-in JavaScript Math library is used in virtually every Node.js application, from generating random ids to calculating exponential back-off times to computing basic performance metrics. When using the Math library, most developers simply assume that the underlying implementations are accurate, performant, and correctly implemented. The goal of social science research is to discover fundamental features of human behavior. One of the best environments to accomplish this task are "games." Scientific behavioral experiments are a particular type of games, where the players' preferences are revealed through strategic interactions. "Gamification" -- the general technique of applying behavioral economics insights to understand any type of problems through games -- is increasingly been used in corporate business. This talk introduces the open-source project nodeGame (nodegame.org), a framework in Node.js to create and manage real-time and discrete-time synchronous behavioral experiments. The basic API for creating and running behavioral experiments in a stand-alone server or on the cloud is presented, and techniques to recruit participants from the Amazon Mechanical Turk labor market and other sources such as Volunteer Science are discussed. The talks also peeks into the world of academia, showing how the availability of data and new quantitative methodologies has changed the way social scientists do research. Their current and future needs for better, more reliable software, simple APIs, and down-to-Earth documentations are discussed.

A commonly used version control system in the ColdFusion community is Subversion -- a centralized system that relies on being connected to a central server. The next generation version control systems are “decentralized”, in that version control tasks do not rely on a central server. Decentralized version control systems are more efficient and offer a more practical way of software development. In this session, Indy takes you through the considerations in moving from Subversion to Git, a decentralized version control system. You also get to understand the pros and cons of each and hear of the practical experience of migrating projects to decentralized version control. Version control is often used in conjunction with a testing framework and continuous integration. To complete the picture, Indy walks you through how to integrate Git with a testing framework, MXUnit, and a continuous integration server, Hudson.

Building distributed systems that work is hard. And scaling those systems by multiple orders of magnitude is even harder. Using examples from internet-scale consumer properties like Google, Amazon, and eBay, this talk deep-dives into the counterintuitive idea that the key to success in large-scale architecture is simplicity. We first discuss simple components like modular services, orthogonal domain logic, and service layering. Next we discuss simple interactions between components, leveraging event-driven models, immutable logs, and asynchronous dataflow. Then we explore techniques that simplify making changes the system, including incremental changes, continuous testing, canary deployments, and feature flags. In the final part of the talk, we show how all these ideas work together with specific architectural examples from Amazon, Netflix, and Walmart. Among many things I love, what I really appreciate doing is the different, and learn with it. Breaking barriers is complicated for any person. Knowledge barriers many times are formed by ourselves by incomplete parts of our mind’s puzzle. What If I could help you out with some piece of Artificial Intelligence, without "puzzling" your head? This project consists of an A.I. coded in Node.JS that learns by itself to play the "Google Chrome"’s Dino game (the one that pops up when there is no internet). Using Neural Networks, and a Genetic Algorithm, I could manage to let the computer learn by itself how to play the game like a ninja. The project has been hosted in github (https://github.com/ivanseidel/IAMDinosaur) and it’s called IAMDinosaur. Interfacing things with Hardware is what I most like (be it through Internet, USB, Bluetooth...).
