Class 2.7 of the PDC+++ How do we apply the fundamental principles to Permaculture Design? It is easy to design if we are clear about the design principles, but much more difficult to really understand & integrate these principles in our practice. In this class we go into more depth about the design principles, with lots of examples of each in order to understand them better.

Class2.7 PDC+++ How do we apply the fundamental principles to Permaculture Design? Principles & Values The Design Principles Designing the Principles Holmgren's Principles
"Principles" sometimes gets confused with "Values" What is the difference? Principles - more objective (not our choice, more 'what there is - collective experience) Values - more subjective (we choose them: they can be principles or not) And what about the Criteria?
Class2.7 PDC+++ How do we apply the fundamental principles to Permaculture Design? Principles & Values The Design Principles Designing the Principles Holmgren's Principles
PRINCIPLES Ecology taken from the natural sciences: biology, chemistry, physics, etc. Attitude from our experience, philosophy, psichology, common sense, etc. Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc. M1 M3 M2
Stacking - in space, stacking functions, stacking in time (up-downs) MiniMax Yield is limited only by Imagination 80% of life's satisfaction comes from meaningful relationships Brian Tracy Ups&Downs One Element fulfills multiple Functions One Function supported by many Elements Niches Relative Location Reduce Consumption Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc.
Plan in Zones & Sectors - is also a design technique > M2.9 Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc.
Ups&Downs - take into account, there are all types Plagues of .. grasshoppers, etc. Pollution = a resource that the system can't process www.airBnB.com Fruit Plan well people/work Optimal use of resources SummerHols Super- Harvests Reduce Consumption tides Periods Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc.
Relative Location - the optimal situation for each element Mini-Max Yield limited only by the imagination Reduce Consumption Plan in Zones & Sectors Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc. One Element fulfills multiple Functions

Create Connexions - 1st avoid them braking, repair & weave Create Bridges Yield limited only by the imagination Un elemento multiples funciones Reduce Consumption Appropiate Technology Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc.

Each Element - Many Functions - all to be as multi-functional as possible Analisis of elements - to find all its needs & functions MiniMax Relative Location Reduce Consumption Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc.
Míni-Max
Use Biological Resources Local Appropriate Tech Care of Earth Analisis of elements - to find all its needs & functions Each Element - Many Functions - all to be as multi-functional as possible
Each Function-multiple Elements - esp. important functions! Security ALWAYS have a Plan B, C, D... Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc.
Appropiate Technology - in M4 .. lots on this! Design from engineering, technical design architecture, IT, cybernetics, etc.
Class2.7 PDC+++ How do we apply the fundamental principles to Permaculture Design? Principles & Values The Design Principles Designing the Principles Holmgren's Principles
Application of Principles Métodos de diseño Pattern Language Planning for Real Future Histories, Future Search & Design Visions Analytical Design Observation PASE (+ client questionnaire) Deduction from Nature / imitating nature Options & Decisions Data Layering Random Connections Flux Diagrams Zones & Sectors Incremental or Development Design by the application of principles Guild Creation Systems engineering
??? excercise - ¡Integrate! maximize the + minimize the - + 3 types of principles + more concrete (detail) + space for own creativity + tree (memorize, etc.) + more graphical - not 'official' (book?) - not so attractive 'packaged' - infantile appearance? Everything Evolves + the colours! + less principles + good graphic design + book accompanie + emphasis on EMERGY - not so much detail - linear - a bit abstract - icons also (abstract)
¿How can we illustrate the principles so that they can be "read" in shapes? graphic design! this one shows something of the relationships between the principles (but not in an optimal way..)
A piece of the design of the Chaordic PC Institute http://permacultureinstitute.pbworks.com which maybe will be re-designed as the CI of IP? trying to make a truly participative design ... in a world of 'stars & followers'... first pilot here:
an excercise in COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE
this is a part of the presentation I tried to illustrate the principles with shapes + APPLYPrinciples
Principles Each important function is supported by many elements important function supported by many elements Learning/Teaching PermaCulture Diploma Labs Nets groups dialogues portafolios Who’s Who Pioneers introductions allies, contacts our history CULTURE maps existing relationships research groups working groups
Appropiate Technology lots of IT people in PC now (give them jobs!) Principles ‘ High Technology’ CAN be appropiate! increase in internet use: change portafolio design lots of new self-publishing tools: self-managing the MOST appropiate use of Internet tec MUST be to teach permaculture!? Information Technology (IT)
Connection Strategies Principles not Personalities (professionalism) Principles Tutors for pre-dips (without so much travel) Support Groups between Perma-Investigators Who’s Who Inter-relating Investigations
Maximizing Edge Principles investigators investigations organizations pioneers email group (tutorials and dialogues - the corridors) groups individual Courses
Accelerating Natural Succesion Principles ‘ mulching’ - VALUING & CHERISHING the work knowing our history (culture) - the pioneers learning - accelerated by personal relationships (with information) action-learning needs lots of communication: & to have the theory ‘at hand’ when most relevant
Principios MiniMax Problem = Solution Re-framing some concepts changing SLIGHTLY diploma portafolios much more learning and contacts for everyone + more self- regulation more peer-learning / teaching opportunities lass admin for diplomats

Class2.7 PDC+++ How do we apply the fundamental principles to Permaculture Design? Principles & Values The Design Principles Designing the Principles Holmgren's Principles
Observe and interact ‘ Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’
Catch and store energy ‘ Make hay while the sun shines'
Obtain a yield ‘ You can't work on an empty stomach'
Obtain a Yield Systems that most effectively obtain a yield and use it most effectively to meet the needs of survival, tend to prevail over alternatives.
Darwin Kropotkin Mutual Aid Competition
A sustainable system produces all the energy and resources that the system needs for it's maintainment and development. The surplus is the YIELD Energía into < System own purposes Energy + Yield ENERGY ACCOUNTING (Sustainabilty) The “YIELD” of a system is theoretically unlimited - IMAGINATION - physical biological espatial Technical conservation social cultural Legal / administrative temporal Considers ‘upstream costs’ (energía into) and ‘ downstream costs’ (ex, health) Cycles Niches in time “ capture flow”
Apply Self-regulation and Accept Feedback ‘ The sin of the fathers are visited on the children unto the seventh generation’
Apply Self-regulation and accept feedback Lower order system providers Higher Order System controller Energy Storage Tripartite Altruism 1/3 1/3 1/3
Set Direct feedback Mechanisms What would happen it a car have the exhaust fed back into the passenger compartment rather than being aimed at the pedestrians? Observe A Dramatic Example:
Use and value Renewable Resources and Services ‘ Let nature take it's course’
Produce no waste ‘ A stitch in time saves nine’ ‘ Waste not, want not’
Design from patterns to Details 'Can't see the wood for the trees'
Integrate rather than segretate 'Many hands make light work'
Use Small and slow solutions ‘ The bigger they are, the harder they fall’ ‘ Slow and steady wins the race’
Use and value Diversity ‘ Don't put all your eggs in one basket’
Use Edges and value the Marginal ‘ Don't think you are in the right track just because it is a well-beaten path’
Creatively use and respond to change ‘ Vision is not seeing things as they are but as they will be’

PDC+++ Module 2 Class 7

 11. individualism > related to isolation .. a disease of our times. In facilitating INDIVIDUAL connexions .. we’re Creating lots of edge ... by braking down to individuals (orgs. often ‘hide’ very interesting individuals ... and it is individuals which join up in partnerships, not orgs nor ‘groups’)
