The 12th Annual Standard Bank Top Women Awards was a success
This was an incredible year for the Top Women stable, Top Media &
Communications and women in general across South Africa. More women
than ever are entering the workforce in South Africa and the number of all-
male boards has steadily decreased over the last twenty years.
There is a traditional perception of a glass ceiling preventing women
around the world, across all sectors of business, preventing women
from progressing on the same terms as men. While this might be true
it is undeniable that the trend is shifting. It is through partnerships and
collaborations that it is possible for us to really make a difference to the
businesses and individuals who participated in this programme.

Ethel Nyembe has had a varied career ranging from Public Relations, Media to Banking.
In 2010, she joined Standard Bank where she is currently heading up Franchising,
Enterprise Development and Small Enterprise in the Retail division. Ethel is passionate
about the entrepreneurial spirit the country holds and has served on several business
boards as well as on the boards of co-operatives in the Johannesburg city centre and
Economic forums in Gauteng. She has a great interest in sport and social upliftment in

Featured on Forbes Africa Cover before 30 and named Entrepreneur for the World 2014
by the World Entrepreneurship Forum, Rapelang is a seasoned technology entrepreneur.
She founded Rekindle Learning, a learning technology company that provides learning
and performance support tools that improve the efficiency with which we learn and
reduce time to competency in corporate and academic environments. Rekindle Learning
was profiled in the McKinsey report Lions go Digital as a striking innovation in mobile
learning. She serves as the Chairperson for Moro Group, an ICT and payment services
group headquartered in Botswana as well as for Generation Ubuntu, an NGO providing
lifesaving holistic care to children living with HIV. Rapelang was also selected as a
Harambe Associate of the Harambe Entrepreneur Alliance.
Nomvula Paula Mokonyane
Minister
Department of Water and Sanitation
Nomvula Mokonyane is a former activist and leader of the civic movement, Kagiso
Residents Organisation; a former shopsteward and leader of the Commercial Catering
and Allied Workers Union of South Africa now the South African Commercial, Catering
and Allied Workers Union. She has served in various leadership capacities in the ANC
and its alliance structures, including as a member of the Central Committee of the
South African Communist Party (SACP), NEC member of the ANC Women’s League
(ANCWL) and NEC member of the ANC since 1994.
Ms Mokonyane has served in the Gauteng Legislature in various portfolio committees
and was a member of the United Democratic Front,a member and organiser of the
Federation of Transvaal Women chairperson of the ANC’s West Rand branch deputy
chairperson of the ANCWL; a member of the SACP Central Committee and a member of
the ANCWL NEC.
