89. Flexpod testimonial “The Cisco, NetApp, and VMware infrastructure is a game changer. We can run our entire business on an integrated and verified platform that we deployed in our data center in just a matter of hours. This infrastructure is where everybody’s going to be in 2012, but we’re already here.” Brian Denton CTO, ExamWorks
Hi everyone, today I’d like to talk to you about the critical role your data center is playing in helping your organization compete successfully. I’d like to highlight how the FlexPod concept can help you have the right data center resources—when you need them—to ensure you have the next generation data center you need. Then, I’d like to speak in more detail about the specific benefits of the FlexPod solution for VMware. Let’s get started….Emanuel
Traditional data centers, however, were simply not designed to accomplish these objectives. They were designed in silos—were servers, storage, networking and applications were all viewed/managed separately. Servers and storage were often dedicated to specific applications. And data centers operated like islandsYou need a next generation data center that will release your organization from these limitations. Instead of siloed infrastructure, you need a unified, shared infrastructure—designed to maximize utilization and minimize operating and facilities costs. You need data centers around the world to work as one, virtualized entity—helping you meet today’s needs—but easily adapting to the needs of tomorrow.Emanuel
But how do you get there—from where you are today? Making the transformation to this next generation architecture is a journey—requiring a proven infrastructure, optimized for virtualization, with all resources working together—to deliver excellent performance, security, availability, manageability, and lower TCO. And you’ll want ensure that you have an integrated support model to address your integrated data center solution, as well. You need more than one choice of one configuration so you can easily adapt to the needs of a specific application—or the demands of a fast growing service. And because your data center is directly related to your ability to respond to changing business demands, you will want to ensure that you can deploy data resources quickly, easily, predictably, and cost-effectively. And its for exactly these reasons, that we’ve created FlexPod.
FlexPod is the most efficient way to make a successful journey to your next generation data center.FlexPod accelerates the transformation from infrastructure silos to a virtualized, shared environment with pre-validated, standardized, scalable building blocks that leverage a next-generation data center solution from Cisco, NetApp, and leading OS and hypervisor partners.Unlike other solutions, FlexPod is a flexible platform—designed to fit many environments and handle mixed workloads. It can be easily tuned and optimized for your specific requirements. They are backed by easy-to-use tools that facilitate your design and sizing process—so you can add applications, and scale up and out as necessaryThe solutions are integrated—so you can count on centralized and simplified management. And the solutions are pre-validated—so they facilitate rapid, repeatable deployment. Christian
So—it’s obvious that FlexPod for VMware in founded on a data center infrastructure solution that is optimized for virtualized environments—but let’s talk pragmatically about what that means to an organization like yoursThis FlexPod configuration comes to you as a complete data center in a one-rack cabinet that you can deploy quickly and easilyAs an example, the base FlexPod configuration can support 1500 users for these four popular workloads simultaneously: VDI, MS Exchange, MS SharePoint and SQL Server. But, it’s key to emphasize that you can flex the configuration to your specific environment. That’s because we’ve remove the guesswork involved. You’ll be able to rely on step-by step design guides and sizing tools—that are specific for FlexPod for VMware.Christian
Now that I’ve talked to you about the benefits of the FlexPod concept, I’d like to talk to you about the unique advantages of FlexPod for VMware. The FlexPod for VMware configuration combines NetApp’s leading storage solutions, with Cisco’s UCS and Nexus data center switches, and VMware vSphere as the hypervisor.Let’s talk first about the advantages of each component: (Click)With VMware vSphere, you get the: Most widely used, trusted virtualization platformManages large infrastructure as flexible, dynamic operating environmentIncorporated within vSphere is vCenter: enabling proactive management of virtual environmentsWith Cisco UCS—you get a system designed, from the ground up for virtualization. The solution unifies compute, network, virtualization and storage into one cohesive system. The result is a radically simplified system that reduces the amount of components that need to be purchased, powered, cooled, managed, and supportive by approximately 50%--and the entire system can be managed as a single entity. Extended memory technology provides you with the largest memory available in a 2-socket system. You also get the advantages of the Nexus family of unified fabric data center switches—which are designed to support massive scalability, higher resource, utilization, and significant cost reductions.NetApp is, of course, the #1 provider of Ethernet based storage. NetApp’s multiprotocol unified architecture reduces cost and complexity by meeting all of your storage requirements with a single, highly scalable solution. And NetApp’s systems have built-in efficiency advantages such as deduplication and thin provisioning, to help you lower costs and increase your ROI, and we also improve data center agility through features like rapid cloning technology that lets you deploy thousands of virtual machines within minutes. Now—each of these FlexPod elements is outstanding in its own right (click)—however, its important to note that each of these elements offers unique benefits due to integration with the others.(Click): For instance, when you combine UCS and vSphere—you get the benefits of VN-Link integration that allows you to manage security and quality of service down to the virtual machine level. The combination helps you improve network throughput up to 30%, reduce your memory costs by up to 60%, which simultaneously helping you increase consolidation ratios and virtualize applications that you might have previously thought were too I/O intensive. When you have a virtualized foundation that is optimized for security, manageability, performance, and lower total cost of ownership—every application you run on that foundation runs better. When you combine NetApp solutions with VMware vSphere—you can integrate the storage administration right into vSphere—for end-to-end VM provisioning and faster cloning. And finally, NetApp storage solutions are uniquely designed to integrate with Cisco UCS and Nexus switches. They are the industry’s first and only platform that can support a one-wire connection for all protocols. Christian
Transcript:With Unified Connect, you don't need to do all that. You can have one network topology based on 10 Gigabit Ethernet running all protocols. Fibre Channel over Ethernet, iSCSI, NFS, CIFS, anything else you'd want to do over that. So that's a lot simpler, and as your customers move to deploy new data centers. Maybe they're going into a new colo, maybe they are moving data centers. It makes a lot of sense to have a discussion with them about do you still need Fibre Channel SANs? Or can your Fibre Channel workloads that you still want to run Fibre Channel for go over your 10 GbE network? Yes. AUDIENCE QUESTION: (Inaudible). SKIP SHAPIRO: Yes, you can see there's Converged Network Adapters required on the server side. And we have got UTAs; Unified Target Adapters, which I think I talk about on my next slide. AUDIENCE QUESTION: (Inaudible). SKIP SHAPIRO: Manufactured by -- no, we buy them. So we source them and qualify them. You can see the two part numbers here, those are the same adapters, UTAs, we have been shipping for the last year plus. We introduce them as 7.3.2 for use with Fibre Channel over Ethernet only. So if your customer already has them installed and they upgrade to 8.0.1, now they can do everything over them, not just Fibre Channel over Ethernet; so don't need new hardware if they already have it.Author’s Original Notes:Unified Connect allows all protocols to run over the Unified Target Adapter (UTA). There is no need for separate cards, separate FC switches as everythng can be run over ethernet and allows customers to fully consolidate their IT environment. We are the only storage vendor to offer this and as such a leader in helping customers consolidate their environments.
