Since 1973, IWRA’s World Water Congress has been taken place once every three years to advance on water resources knowledge, policy and management around the world. Presently, is the largest congress of its type – bringing together international water researchers and policy practitioners. This year its XVIIth edition to take place from May 11th to May 15th in Daegu, South Korea, it will focus on Water Security and Resilience. This main international water event in 2020, will also be a milestone on the road to the 9th World Water Forum in Dakar in 2021 with a shared theme on Water Security, specific sessions and activities, and invited representatives.
As a multidisciplinary event, it will be divided into three crosscutting issues and five subthemes around this more-than-ever important main theme. Particularly, in terms of water governance, themes B on “Maximizing social, cultural and economic benefits” and theme E on “Implementing pathways for development and cooperation” include dedicated subthemes on Water Allocation and Governance (B2), Water Governance (E3) and Grass-roots or collective actions for collaboration in local governments.
During this congress there are many ways to participate including oral and poster presentations, special sessions, side events, youth ambassador's programme, or as a general participant as early birds registrations are currently open. Programme highlights includes high-level panels, a welcome reception, a gala dinner and the awards ceremony. All OECD’s WGI members are invited to participate and, of course, a dedicated WGI special session is most welcomed!
Moreover, there is a bit of a big update we would like to share with the WGI community. This is that IWRA as well as the XVII Congress co-hosts including the Ministry of Environment, K-water, Daegu Metropolitan City and Korea Water Resources Association are happy to announce the next edition of the Korean International Water Week (KIWW) will take place in conjunction with this main water event this year.
From the Monday, May 11th to the Wednesday, May 13th KIWW 2020 will also run in the same venue – EXCO - and both events will share the Opening Ceremony being held jointly on the morning of Monday, May 11; a Welcome Dinner Reception being held jointly on the evening of Monday, May 11; a joint ‘Special Session’ linking the over-arching themes of the two events; and possibly, a number of KIWW general program sessions integrated with the XVII WWC program.
Once again, we look forward to meeting you all in South Korea in 4 months time and continue collaborating and developing new opportunities with the WGI community.
