Enterpreneurship in numbersEnterpreneurship in numbers
 About 1.7 million comapnies operating in Poland – 99.8% of which
are medium and small size companies (they generate 68.1% of total
employment and contribute 54% of value added to the Polish economy)
 Polish SMEs operate mainly in services and trade (75.8%),
construction (13.5%) and processing industry (10.7%)
 Compared to the EU average the SME’s sector in Poland is more
dominated by microcompanies (96%)
 The youngest companies (i.e. established in 2010) represent 12.6%
of all business entities while almost 62.2% run business for over 5
years
 In 2003-2011 the number of newly established firms was higher
than the number of closed ones

External determinants:
 Impact of the environement (legal, economic, social, etc.)
 Level of education in society (the better educated society the better
comanies cope on the market)
 Access to financing (the high-grow companies require larger ammounts
on investment as it is subject to greater risk)
Internal determinants:
 Characteristics of the owner (education, personal motivation, ambition)
 Efficient management schemes (strategic planning, team management,
innovation, internationalisation)

 innovativeness of an enterprise is determined by the level and type of
education,
 innovativeness of an enterprise is more influenced by the senior
management skills and competences than by the junior staff skills
Intelligent organisations:
• 12% of SMEs in Poland can be named IO,
• the knowledge-based management is a crucial factor of company’s
strategy,
• employees are motivated to be creative and take up initiative in the
company,
• they are usually selected to a given project, based on their skills and
qualifications,
• IO are more likely to cooperate with R&D units

implemenation of strategic planning,
financial assistance for business start-

 217.000 companies and more than
882.000 employees covered by the
support (including over 187.000 low
qualified workers)
 More than 2.700 enterprises covered
by the support in the field of anticipation
of change and change management

MODULE 1: FUNDAMENTAL MANAGERIAL SKILLS: planning, organizing,
management and monitoring
MODULE 2: EFFECTIVE TEAMWORK: motivation, situational leadership,
efficient teamwork, delegating tasks
MODULE 3: PERSONAL MANAGERIAL SKILLS: decision-making, building
assertiveness, goal-oriented management, public adresses
MODULE 4: LEADERSHIP: vision, strategy, tactics building authority

What lessons for 2014-2020?What lessons for 2014-2020?
 ESF project should better target the high-growth companies
(drivers of economic development) e.g. through specific selection
criteria, dedicated projects, etc.)
 More tailor-made approach is needed (high-growth companies
require individualised support adjusted to their specific needs,
investing in leadership and management skills)
 Investing in efficient education system (curricula on
entrepreneurship, building leadership skills, promoting sucess
stories, etc.)
 Building business-friendly environement (legal, social,
economic, cultural, etc.)
