9. What is the problem?
The research community has lacked
the ability to link researchers and
scholars with their professional
activities.
• Discoverability within and across databases
• Author, grantee, and faculty record management
• Member and meeting management
• Reviewer selection
• Interoperability between research info systems

10. Keys to success w/researchers
• Make things easy for researchers – save them
time!
• Systems need to integrate with ORCID to
exchange metadata so researchers don’t have
to type in information on different systems
• Example: sign into manuscript submission
systems with ORCID – grant application
systems need to do the same

11. ORCID & CrossRef
http://orcid.org/0000-0002-5993-8592
Live ORCID iDs - 964,638
Works with unique DOIs - 2,222,880
ORCID iDs in CrossRef – 135,473
12.
13. Exciting next step….
• Publishers collect ORCID iDs on manuscript
submission
• Publishers deposit ORCID iDs with CrossRef
metadata on publication
• CrossRef will automatically update the
researcher’s profile (with their permission)
with the new publication.

Notes de l'éditeur
However, there is currently a “knowledge discovery problem” – name ambiguity means that researchers and their activities and publications can’t be connected in a reliable way across the whole scholarly communications system. Funders can’t track the outputs of the research they fund and universities can’t easily and reliably track the activities and output of their faculty and this limits the ability to develop incentives for encouraging – or requiring – OA publications – be they journal articles, books or data.
Outside of CrossRef ORCID is one of the most important initiatives we are participating in. I urge everyone to engage - researchers to claim an ORCID iD and institutions - universities and funders - to join ORCID and integrate their systems.
FundRef Search directs the user to search using one of the funding body names in the registry. It handles acronyms so NIH will bring up the National Institutes of Health as in this example. You’ll see that countries are listed - which is important because more than one country has a “National Science Foundation”...
