2. Potential Benefits for Funders
• Funders need to:
– Easily track the research careers and productivity
of grantees during the grant and beyond
– Show return on investment
• Having a single, unique identifier may be beneficial if:
– Data can be reciprocally shared between
publishers, library clearinghouses (NLM, PubMed
Central)
– Funders “require” participation and grantees
“comply”
3. Potential Benefits to Researchers
• Ability to easily differentiate their own articles and
grants from those of similarly-named researchers
(from Varmus, HE to Smith/Jones/Lee/Li/Nguyen)
• Ideally, a way to maintain an up-to-date CV without
relying the myriad of different systems
– For tenure and promotion decisions
– To demonstrate “impact” in terms of citation indices and
article-level metrics
• However, obtaining a number and linking all of the
publications/grants needs to be easy for us (“carrot”)
and we probably won’t do it until you make us
(“stick”)
