cause.
We	now	have	ac9vists	who	take	to	their	computers	and	generate	nois
but	they	lack	the	mo9va9on	to	take	real,	substan9ve	ac9on.	(5)	
Save	Darfur	cause	was	one	of	the	largest	causes	on	Faceboo
ever	but	99.76	percent	of	the	supporters	never	donated.	(7
Slack9vism	-	users	misinterpret	their	simple	online	
ac9ons	as	enough	to	promote	change.	especially	
common	with	movements	that	oversimplify	their	issues	
to	a	hashtag.(6)
The	kony	campaign	was	one	of	the	largest	in	recent	history	and	one	of	the	most	
fundamentally	flawed.	The	campaign	had	huge	awareness	but	the	complex	poli9cal	
situa9on	was	very	misunderstood	and	could	not	be	explained	in	a	short	video.	The	
complex	poli9cal	and	socioeconomic	issues	of	Uganda	and	surrounding	area’s	history	
were	leN	untold	and	the	people	not	aided.	(6)
So	how	can	we	be	effec9ve	
click9vists?
Keep	the	ac9ons	simple.	
Find	something	that	anyone	can	do	and	that	will	
contribute	to	the	cause.	ex:	ALD	ice	bucket	
challenge,	donate	or	get	iced
Connect	with	real	life	campaigns	
	
Provide	resources	for	people	who	want	to	do	more,	whether	
it’s	through	a	dona9on,	a	pe99on	or	a	protest.	(6)
Understand	your	limita9ons.	
Know	that	liking	and	sharing	can	only	go	so	far	and	real	
change	can	only	occur	when	ac9on	is	taken.
Nothing	too	small	
“Despite	the	oN-repeated	claim	that	awareness	does	
nothing,	it	almost	always	does	something	—	
something	small,	perhaps,	but	something	
measurable.”	(3)
Come	Together		
The	real	power	of	social	media,	compared	to	
passive	mass	media,	is	that	they	can	be	used	by	
any	person	or	self-organizing	group	for	a	
common	goal.	(9)
If	we	come	together	and	take	ac9on,	
we	can	change	the	world.		
There	are	count	less	examples	of	what	
we	can	do	if	we	are	connected	and	take	
ac9on.
Egyp9an	Revolu9on	
The	Egyp9an	people	came	together	through	a	
social	media	to	form	a	protest.	Though	it	turned	
violent	the	end	result	was	a	success	as	they	
ousted	the	raining	dictator.
“Given	the	clear	roll	of	digital	tools	in	the	protests,	authori9es	blocked	Twi5er,	and	then	
eventually	the	Internet	and	SMS,	in	a5empts	to	quell	organizing.	When	the	networking	sites	
were	available,	ci9zens	shared	images	of	their	experiences	with	the	world	through	YouTube	and	
Flickr.	Once	Mubarak	resigned,	Egyp9ans	took	to	YouTube	and	Twi5er	to	share	their	
reac9ons.”(8)
Founded	in	2003	to	fundraise	for	men's	health	through	sponsored	moustache	growing,	
Movember	has	built	a	community	based	on	shared	humour.	The	campaign	garnered	1.2m	
social	media	men9ons	alone	last	year,	whilst	fundraising	currently	stands	at	£63.9m.	(10)
Last	year	Ac9on	on	Hearing	Loss	convinced	John	Lewis	to	add	
sub9tles	to	its	Christmas	TV	advert,	just	by	asking	on	Twi5er.	
It	was	a	very	simple	but	effec9ve	social	media	campaign	that	
nevertheless	made	a	big	difference	to	its	beneficiaries.
Social	media	gives	us	a	power	unmatched	in	history	to	bring	important	
causes	to	the	a7en8on	of	millions.	As	we	mark	this	one-year	
anniversary	of	the	Nigerian	kidnappings,	the	girls	of	Chibok	are	at	risk	
of	becoming	vic8ms	of	slack8vism	as	much	as	radicalism.	(1)
With	the	advances	of	social	media	so	come	the	advances	
of	crowd	funding.	With	so	much	notoriety	and	awareness	
from	social	media	it	could	allow	good	causes	to	generate	
funds	by	genng	small	amount	form	a	large	group.(4)
Nothing	is	to	big	or	small!,		
Just	so	long	as	we	tack	ac9on,	
But	most	importantly	work	together!
