Director – Innovation Lab
Practical work to address social challenges
From the name, experimental approach, back innovations
Grant funder also as coach, mentor – not just a cheque.
Give you a sense of the work we do on health and innovation
Using themes from open policy-making
One of the characteristics of our work: blurring of the boundaries between policy and delivery
Sometimes the techniques cited in open policy-making all feel extremely small scale e.g. prototyping, blueprinting, ethnographic insights.
We use them in our work – and I know you have sessions on them later on.
I’m going to try to give you a perspective of how they can be built back up again into something that can helpfully influence national policy.
I’m particularly interested in this – having been part of the SCS in the Cabinet Office before joining Nesta.
Who is Nesta?
Ex-quango
Former NDPB under BIS
Now an independent charity
Hybrid organisation: investor, funder, do our own research and create networks
National lottery endowment
Charitable foundation focused on innovation for the public good
Not much use to set up a series of very small scale trials without being able to build back up again to have wider impact….
We haven’t cracked this – work in progress
Iterate between the specific and local and the wider, system implications of what’s going on.
People Powered Health
Scaling new models of care
Long term conditions
Patients and professionals – more collaborative
All of our work is based on experimentation
Different approaches in different programmes that we run
As a funder, explicitly try out different techniques to support innovation:
Flexibility in grant management, skills development in innovation techniques
People Powered Health
Scaling up existing practice – relatively early stage but not starting from a whiteboard and a set of lego.
Learning environment – learn from one another
Incorporated peer insight into the selection process!
Six teams across England – focused on collaborative approaches to living with long term conditions (co-production). All quite different – chosen on the basis of practice (not on a research basis).
Vision:
Rebalancing of the health care system
For people
By people – self-management
With people – creating and mobilising social networks to promote health – peer support networks – supporting through our work with the Cabinet Office on the Centre for Social Action.
Cleear that to achieve that vision requires lots of different forms of change
Not under the remit of any single organisation
Characteristics of systemic challenge – complex, cross-sectoral, requires alliances, allignment.
Can’t be a push model of innovation – health system not designed for that, not effective without a pull – from clinicians and also from patients.
Recognised that…trying to address it
Very early stages of trying to pull together a coalition of organisations that, collectively, can influence the chunks on the previous slide
Soft launch at NHS Expo in March
Not yet formally constituted
Experiment – different to some other coalitions – effective lobbying groups
Trying to bring together organisations in order for them to work differently – even more challenging
Some of the current members
About 60 others have got in touch since NHS Expo to learn more
Some key gaps
Intention:
Influence the system conditions to make them more conducive to collaborative care
Provide hands-on support to local health economies who want to make the shift
NHS England – influence Martin McShane’s take-up of the House of Care, GP contract negotiations.
NHS IQ – toolkits
Patient organisations – patient pull
Clinical and professional bodies – workforce, professional development..
Year of Care tariff…
