26 July 2014
Dear Colleague(s):
Warm greetings!
The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians, Inc. (PAARL) will be holding a two-day Public
Consultation and Training Workshop on RDA Policy and Action Plan for Philippine Libraries to be held at
Phela Grande Hotel, Magsaysay Avenue cor. Atis St., General Santos City on 28-29 August 2014.
Librarians, catalogers, library administrators and faculty of LIS who have had training/orientation/background
on RDA are invited to participate in this training. This activity aims to:
1. Provide a nationwide public consultation for the full adaptation and implementation of the National
Policy on Resource Description and Access for Filipiniana Materials/Resources among different types
of libraries, museums and archives;
2. Develop an action plan for RDA implementation in the country; and
3. Conduct a hands-on training/workshop on the application of the proposed policies and standard.
RATIONALE
RDA offers libraries the potential to change significantly on how bibliographic data is created and used. Thus,
in 2012, the PRC-PRB for Librarians issued Resolution No. 4, Series of 2012 prescribing the adoption of the
International Cataloging Principles and RDA as the official cataloging standard for Philippine libraries. Then in
2013, PAARL in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) – National
Committee on Library and Information Services (NCLIS), National Library of the Philippines and the National
Committee on Resource Description and Access (NCRDA) conducted a series of training workshops in Luzon,
Visayas and Mindanao aiming to give an overview on RDA, emphasizing on the core elements in RDA and other
conceptual/theoretical foundation of the new standard as well as came up with the standardized Resource
Description and Access for Philippine Libraries and Information Centers.
Therefore, this year’s RDA National Training is focused on cascading the RDA Standard for Philippine Libraries
and Information Centers.
