HOW TO TALK TO YOUR PARENTS You will at some point argue with your parents about what you should be studying, where you should be going, how you should be paying for it and more Tips to talk to your parents: Be upfront and honest Don’t give up after one conversation, if it is important you need to make it a priority Involve a third party – me, SPSW, guidance counselor, family member – but remember that at the end of the day they need to hear from you Tell them that instead of going to college, youre going to join the circus as a sad clown
CASE STUDY #1 Jamal wanted to go to the University of Toronto to study biomedicine. Eventually he wants to become a family doctor. Unfortunately Jamal failed Biology and got a 57% in Chemistry in his first semester. What could he do next? What might be some flaws in his plan? APPLYING TO COLLEGE Many college programs have articulation agreements This means you can go to college for 2 years and then use the college diploma as credit towards a university degree EX – Seneca Accounting – York University Business Admin Some programs have bridging courses you can take EX - GBC Practical Nursing – Bridging program – Ryerson Registered Nursing

She stays on and does a 5th year of high school to try and bring up her marks. She re-applies to both College and University and again she does not get accepted to the programs she applied to.
