  1. Key points: Not just Web apps or someone else’s datacenter. From a competitive standpoint important to broaden the concept of cloud across devices. Script: First of all, “the cloud” is short for cloud computing. As with many topics that blend technical subjects with business hype there are a number of definitions. Most of the time people think of large datacenters that someone else runs on your behalf or Web applications that you can access from browsers. We tend to think of it as something more, it’s the collection of devices (servers, PCs, mobile devices) using the network to pool resources and work together. You typically see this in large datacenters today; where servers seamlessly work together to easily absorb more traffic and to react when something breaks without people having to intervene. The sum ends up being greater than the parts. So, it’s about datacenters and devices and applications working better together. So what? Why should I care? In general you can use the cloud in three separate ways: Pushing things to the cloud, Using the cloud as a resource when needed (or all the time) and sharing or hosting your data or applications with others once you’ve put it into the cloud (one you directly control or that could be run for you by someone else.) 2. Key Points: Microsoft has a long history of providing some of the largest cloud services in the world. Script: We’ve actually been in cloud computing for a while: We’ve been delivering some of the largest cloud services on the planet for almost 15 years. Our online properties (WL, MSN) see some 600 million unique users every month Xbox pushed out some 5 petabytes of content over Xbox Live during the week of Christmas (2009) We process up to 9.9 billion messages a day via WL Messenger We have over 500 million active Windows Live IDs The Office 365 guys have a million paying users in 36 countries and regions Even MS Update/Windows Update … operates at incredible scale - pushes out over a petabyte of updates every month to millions of servers and hundreds of millions of PCs   When you look at our experience, our commitment and our continued leadership in cloud computing there are a number of fairly substantial differences between us and other providers. 3. To reinforce this: Globally, we expect to see 400 million connected consumer electronics devices by 2014 (Strategy Analytics, June 2010) This is in addition to the forecasted 1.5B mobile phone handsets shipped in that year. By 2014, mobile data transfer to these consumer devices alone is expected to increase more than one hundred times to nearly 530 TB (ABI) annually. That’s more than 100x the size of the Library of Congress’ printed collection Jim Gray story, “Digital Me.” When 1TB in pocket, “whole lives will be digital.” “Storing every life memory in a surrogate brain” Price/TB fallen by 2 orders of magnitude in the last 10 years. $8K->$800->$80 Terabyte in our pocket is in sight. “ There was a quite famous researcher at Microsoft by the name of Jim Gray who unfortunately passed away in an untimely way boating, before he did that I had the opportunity to work with him and his last project was extremely interesting. He called it 'my digital life' and his idea was he was going to digitize everything in his life; every piece of paper, every bill, every voice mail, very show he watched on TV and he wanted to understand the implications of that. His hypothesis was that when we can reasonably expect a terabyte to fit in your pocket and be affordable we can reasonably expect everything in our lives to be digital. Since he made that hypothesis, a terabyte has come down two orders of magnitude in cost. It's now sub-hundred dollars and we absolutely are within arms reach of the devices that we carry in our pockets, the cars, the TVs in our lives, the phones at home, and frankly every device having something on the order of a terabyte of storage. What does it mean for us when we provide service when we know people have that capability? Well, it means that we can have a lot more information that we can provide on the devices we sell, but we can also push down to the devices people have in their lives so that information is available when we're interacting with customers. You know we don't just have the option to put up instructional videos on our website and hope customers find them. When there's a trouble shooting call, we can have the agent create a video that gets pushed down in real time to the device the user is using to help them trouble shoot their situation. “
  4. WIIFY: Microsoft’s vision for speech is to deliver natural, seamless interfaces, across devices, from the cloud In this NUI era, Speech will use the Cloud to enable natural interactions and automate complex, unstructured tasks. To ensure Speech reaches its potential as a key NUI, will require us to do two things, innovate broadly and integrate deeply : Innovate across a broad set of technologies, products, and devices, while continuing our deep investments in our Cloud speech platform Integrate Speech very deeply into everyday tasks and experiences. We have identified 4 key scenarios where we are focusing this investment: Automotive, Mobility, Entertainment, and of course, Enterprise. Speech is not an application. It is an integral part of the product experience.
  5. WIIFY: By combining Natural User Interfaces, we can enable new kinds of experiences. Key points: 10 years ago, we made a long-term bet on another connected device, the Xbox. Many see it as a gaming device, but we see gaming as just the first “killer app” for the platform. Since launch, we’ve continually updated the service (also delivered from the cloud), enabling digital media, social communication, and new ways to share The limiting factor in the family room has been the UI, namely the controller and the remote control. It’s just not natural for these new, connected experiences.
