surgery news
Denise Mann

2. 10. The March of the Gummy
Bears
O There had been a steady drumbeat
heralding the arrival of “gummy bear”
breast implants since the early 2000s, and
June 2013 marked the approval of the
third form-stable implant –Mentor’s
MemoryShape joined Sientra’s implants
and Allergan’s 410
3. 9. Juvederm Voluma
O Allergan Inc’s Juvéderm Voluma™ XC got
the official FDA nod in October 2013.
O This is the first designer or site-specific
filler to come to the US, but likely not the
last.
4. 8. Below-the-Belt Plastic
Surgery
O Labiaplasty procedures increased by 44% over the course
of the year, and buttock augmentation procedures rose by
58%, according to statistics from the American Society for
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
O “I believe the dramatic increase in both of these
procedures is indicative of much larger global trends
respecting body image, an ever-evolving concept of beauty,
and self-confidence. More women are pursuing these
procedures as a means to achieve a standard of beauty
they deem appropriate for themselves, however I believe
more women are also pursuing procedures like labiaplasty
to correct labia-related issues that are interfering with their
ability to perform sexually, to perform daily tasks such as
exercise, or are merely causing discomfort,” explains
Michael Edwards, MD, ASAPS President.
5. 7. PIP Scandal Fallout
O About 300,000 women in 65 countries are
believed to have received faulty PIP
implants. The scandal was the catalyst for
international reform that continues to play
out to this day.
6. 6. Alphaeon Comes to Town
O The new “lifestyle healthcare” company
has been grabbing headlines and turning
heads ever since its debut at a major
industry meeting.
8. 4. Melanoma Game Changer
O The FDA approved two new drugs,
Tafinlar (dabrafenib) and Mekinist
(trametinib), for patients with metastatic or
unresectable melanoma along with a
genetic test to help determine if a patient’s
melanoma cells have the V600E or V600K
mutation in the BRAF gene.
O This is personalized medicine in action,
plus a breakthrough in treating melanoma.
9. 3. Celebrity stories
O Each year, there is at least one celebrity
plastic surgery story with which the
tabloids have a field day… This year, it’s
been Bruce Jenner and Kim Novak
