The Circuit: Building Trails that Connect Cities, Suburbs, and Everywhere In Between Abstract: This session will discuss how the Circuit Coalition is using advocacy, communications and planning to realize the vision of a 750 mile multi-use trail network connecting Greater Philadelphia. A cultural desert festival called Rann Utsav is organized in a highly eco-sensitive zone. It complies with the extremely strict norms for its operation ensuring no damage to the natural resources. In addition to this, the festival had to be crafted as a solution that uplifted the native people of Kutch, instead of commercializing the event for monetary gains. Chronicled here are a series of initiatives that make Rann Utsav a sustainable initiative that lead to positive impact on the development of Kutch.

The Kingston Greenline & Ulster County Trails Summit was made possible with funding from the Land Trust Alliance's Conservation Partnership Catalyst Grant Program. The Summit included a keynote presentation from Jeff Olson, author of The Third Mode and principal with Alta Planning + Design. Lindsay Zefting, planner and engineer with Alta Planning + Design presented the final report for the Kingston Point Rail Trail Feasibility Study. A panel comprising representatives from the Kingston Land Trust, Ulster County Planning, the Hudson River Valley Greenway and Parks & Trails NY discussed the emerging trail network in Ulster County.

Riverkeeper was recently invited to make a presentation at the 2015 Mohawk Watershed Symposium, Inspiring People to Stop Water Pollution Through Community Science. Riverkeeper has been sampling the Hudson River since 2008, and in tributaries and along the New York City waterfront, in partnership with a variety of individuals and community groups, since 2011 and 2012. As we sample, we follow a simple mantra suggested early on by our science partners, Dr. Greg O’Mullan and Dr. Andy Juhl: “Let the data do the talking.” Where the data show problems, solutions often follow. Here’s a look at some of the accomplishments that have resulted from gathering and publicizing data. It should be noted that in none of these cases were lawsuits filed or threatened; the Water Quality Program uses advocacy and communications as its main tools for effecting change.

Full Description: Federal programs provide funds to develop transportation, community, and recreation infrastructure for walking and bicycling and to connect communities and promote active living.
