Introduction
• Definition: Building regulation are the set of rules to control the building design
development and to set the standard governed by the local and regional body.
• All the builders, architects, civil contractors etc. needs to follow or achieve this
standard in order to obtain the development or building use permissions within
the city limits.
• This course is introduced to understand that how building code caters to the
controlled development of urban built forms.
• The main objective of this course is to make familiarise with development
permission process of local urban development bodies.

Brief Introduction of town planning processes
• Study the examples of modern and ancient town planning processes and its analysis
Brief introduction of Building codes
• Study of building regulations like National Building code of India (N.B.C) and General development
control regulations (G.D.C.R of Ahmedabad).
Development regulations for planning
• Zoning, land use, site planning and building standards like, building heights, margins, parking
areas, common areas etc.
Regulations for performance and monitoring
• To ensure proper light and ventilation, structural safety, improve accessibility etc. and to inclusion of
sustainability aspect like, sanitation, rain water harvesting etc.
Development process permission
• Obtaining building use permissions and roles of the stakeholders involved in the process
